We are the least penalized team (2.5/game) in the country:
https://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/stat/penalties-per-game

So for all those that say we play nasty, and cheat, and try to hurt people - the evidence does not support that contention. And a side note, the NCAA site has us 3rd in penalties per game at 3.60.

TaQuon Marshall would rank 4th in the country in Passing Efficiency (177.7) if he had enough attempts.

TaQuon Marshall is 8th in the country in scoring.

Pressley Harvin is 15th in the country at 44.9 yards/punt.

I wish there were a punting efficiency stat - how much of the available yards do you consume when you punt. Because he's got 19 punts with 8 inside the 20 and 7 fair catches.

8 yards per carry ranks 3rd in the country in rushing. Most of our guys don't have enough carries to show up:
Jerry Howard 9.6 ypc
Clinton Lynch: 9.3 ypc
Nate Cottrell: 8.4 ypc
JJ Green: 7.6 ypc

TaQuon Marshall is #16 and KirVonte Benson is #22 in rushing yards per game:

Antonio Simmons is tied for 11th nationally with roughly 1 sac per game (5 total):

TaQuon Marshall would be 4th in yards per pass attempt if he had enough attempts:

We are 15th in total defense at 304 yards per game.
We are 8th in 3rd down offense at 49.3%.
We are 2nd in 3rd down defense at 22.4%.
We are 20th in 4th down offense, making 71% of attempts.
We are lowest in penalty yards in the country at 27.2 per game.
We are 3rd in the country in 1st down defense.
We are DEAD LAST in red zone defense - we are still at 100% scoring allowed. BUT, 5 of the 13 scores are now FG.
We are 3rd in rushing offense at 362 yards per game.
We are 34th in scoring defense at 20.4. But its STUPID how they calculate this. They include overtime scoring and scores that were against the defense (ie special teams). If you correct for that, we drop down to 16 points per game, which would be 12th in the country.
We're second in the country with time of possession of 35:52.

I hate the punt yard average stat. Look at net punt yards and Harvin is 70th. Some of it has been bad coverage but, to me, he’s been outkicking his coverage a few times. He did have some much better punts this week though.

Thanks for the stats though.

Well if you just remove the punt return TD by Pittsburgh, his net punting is 14th in the country.

I had discussion with a UGA buddy this weekend about the option offense (I know, I should get better friends). Anyway, we talked about two different stats: turnovers and QB efficiency. With respect to turnovers, his belief was that, by their very nature, option offenses have more turnovers. I investigated that based on data from Tech and Navy, and don't think there is any support for that conclusion. The following numbers are turnovers per season, with national rank out of 130 FBS teams in parentheses -- meaning 65th is average:

I was a bit surprised how well Navy tends to do, particularly compared to Tech.

I also explained to him the idea and importance of QB efficiency in our system over raw yardage and attempts numbers. Anyway, I sent him some numbers I looked up and figured they would fit here as well as anywhere else if folks were interested. The following are the NCAA Efficiency Rating rank and ESPN QBR rank for the QBs under CPJ. It is notable that we have had a top-20 QB in efficiency 5 different times in 10 years, spanning over 4 different quarterbacks. Also, not surprisingly, our QBs tend to improve their efficiency their second year in the system.

What about turnovers per possession?

Well, we do play a much much tougher schedule. Typically most turnovers are not just handing the ball over but when the defense makes a play. If we played their schedule, I wouldn't be surprised if we had half the turnovers.

and off of that leads to an very underwhelming 3-2 record.

I think they went to that rugby thing to buy our cover guys a little more time. Not sure how it has worked statistically.

In theory, we also have much better athletes running our offense compared to Navy though, right?

@GTRX7 Why is your car red and black?

While I refuse to wear any red clothing (all my Atlanta United gear is either grey or black), I can’t extend that rule all the way to my cars. And I am definitely not cool enough to pull off a gold car. If it helps, my other car is white.

Well, the question of cool was already answered by the RX7, ... just kidding and just giving you a meaningless hard time for no good reason

Now you are really going to hate me. I actually went to law school in Athens. But I repped Tech the whole time, and now that I think about it did drive a gold (champaign) colored 240SX that had a GT vanity plate on the front. Made it a whole three years until some UGA student finally kicked the vanity plate in just before graduation. Was surprised it lasted that long. Lol.

Tailgated for every UGA game...then sold my student ticket for beer money and went downtown to watch Tech : )
