Yeah people taking this stuff too personally. Folks gotta stop pretending they wouldn't explore options when presented. Heck, as adults, we'd be fools not to.
Most on here would. But, perhaps, we should all stop with the wishing him the best nonsense. No one should wish injury on the kid, but why should we want to seem him go for 800 to 1000 and 8 TD's. Forget that mess. Its the same as when a coworker goes to a competitor, they are now part of the opposition that you should want to see succeed as little as possible.

Ummm nobody is asking anyone to continue supporting Singleton if he goes somewhere else. But denigrating him, saying he wasn’t that good anyway, that he quit on his team, is disingenuous and disrespectful
I haven’t seen anyone say he wasn’t any good. The opinions have actually generally been pretty honest and reasonable, and generally not disrespectful. Very fast, struggles to catch the ball…not a very unique skill set, which makes everyone question the money being discussed.

But apparently his dad says money has nothing to do with it. Which is even more puzzling. So whatever man. It is what it is.

Our staff apparently disagrees.
Not necessarily. They are simply saying that given our budget he isn’t worth that high a percentage of it. I would agree. I don’t think he is indispensable and we had some other clutch guys and Malik Rutherford, while a different type of player, is damn clutch himself (I’m holding back only because I am extremely biased towards Malik because he’s just about my favorite player on the team - I just love the guy and everything he brings to the table). But let’s not pretend Eric Singleton made a ton of tremendous plays for us.

I totally get folks feeling he’s quitting on GT. And I totally get folks who feel he’s leaving so I’m not going to wish him well. I get it and have no issue at all with anyone who feels that way. But let’s not go doing the revisionist history to minimize his contribution to helping us turn the program around the last couple of years. It’s possible to appreciate how valuable he was AND feel he isn’t worth that high a cost to us where our funding level is.

I suspect "wishing him well" or "the best" simply pertains to hoping the kid does well in life. Nobody's thinking about stats or whatever.

Why shouldn’t I be able to wish him the best if I choose to do so. How about this? You feel how you want and I’ll feel how I want. If Eric goes somewhere that isn’t competing with us I wish him much success because I choose to appreciate what he did for us beyond just the moment he did it. If Eric goes somewhere that’s competing against us I will not be wishing him the best when it hurts GT.

You do you and despite it being different then my opinion I will not call it nonsense.

No because everyone saw it coming and understood with Choice also leaving that TFG was a clown.
I had mixed feelings about Gibbs. A not insignificant number of people on here back then defended TFG by saying players leaving was a good sign. Yeah, we’re going to be great but only for about 3 games a year because our best players are going to keep moving on.

Also, Gibbs opting out of games prior to making his announcement of leaving did not sit well with me. I didn’t think you could have it both ways- an elite coach with elite players who also sit out while the team is hammered 100 to 0. The administration was also still trying to figure out how to keep TFG on as coach. I mean, if you were determined to keep TFG then players like Gibbs should not quit* on the team. It was a mess and part of me hated that Gibbs was content to leave the rest of us in this mess while he opted out of games.

* yes, it was the definition of quitting and completely different from Singleton leaving a strong program to test his market worth.

We are playing with less NIL money than many other schools which mean we have to be more selective and spread out our money out to maximize our roster. With the odds of players getting hurt, I understand their goal in many cases is to maximize short term revenue opportunities. Singleton gave his all for GT and I just hope he doesn't go to a school that we play (like Miami).

Folks acting like they never changed jobs, or quit a job, or changed majors, or dropped a class. Smh, odd.

I don’t entirely disagree but some of us tend to see these players as kids which softens our feelings. Unless he goes to uga 😊

I had a friend freshman year at Tech that started a company and then sold it to Fedex or UPS (can't remember which) and dropped out by sophmore year as he was a multimillionaire. Some would argue he should have finished the degree, but in reality the degree is a means to an end, and he already got to the end and knew how to make it last the rest of his life. I don't fault Singleton for getting what he can, I just hope he knows how to use it wisely so he doesn't end up with nothing in a few years.

Such great philosophical questions are raised by your response. I don’t blame your friend or Singleton, either one, for maximizing their earning potential.

The question of the purpose of a degree is more nuanced for me. Is the purpose to get a job or get a life? Is the purpose to make money or discover a vocation? And is it important to see learning, in and of itself, as an intrinsic good not needing external validation like income bracket?

Again, I’m not asking this of either your friend or Singleton, since they seem to know what they are about. Just musing out loud about the “value” of a Tech degree beyond just being a means to an end.

Full disclaimer, I was influenced by Plato at a tender age. 😊

I wasn’t in this forum when Gibbs left, were the reactions similar?
There was a mix of reactions. If you search well, you should be able to find the thread.

NIL wasn't an official thing then, so money was not discussed as much. Tashard Choice was leaving for Texas at the same time. Fans were disgusted with TFG, but also unhappy that Gibbs checked out before the half.

Was it grades?

I haven't heard anything like that.

If it's not money, why is Auburn in the top 5?

So stop rooting for Haynes King then, he quit on his team. Stop rooting for EJ Lightsey, Jordan Van den Berg, and whatever receiver we get from the portal to replace Singleton if that’s your view.

It’s not quitting on your team, no matter how much you try to insinuate it is, it’s not.
I am a fan of Georgia Tech. If a guy quits on his team to join mine, I’m all for it. It doesn’t mean I have to be all for the other way around.

If his dad says it isn’t money then I’m unsure what else it would be

I think it should be based on your long term goals. Where do you want to be in 5 years? 10 years? 30 years?

If Bill Gates had remained in Harvard instead of leaving to start Microsoft, he most likely would not have become a billionaire. I am projecting, but I think that he knew what he wanted to do and he went in the path that aligned with that. I think there is an issue when people drop out of college without drive and without clear goals in mind. But I think that people who have drive and know what they intend to do drop out, that they are doing the best thing for themselves.

Regarding Singleton and the current transfer situation: I don't know what his long term goals are. I don't know what his short term needs are for himself and his family. Hopefully he is doing the best thing for himself.

Regarding transfers in general: I think it is hypocritical for fans to demand that star players be "loyal" to the team, while at the same time calling for underperforming players to be cut from the team in order to bring in higher performing players. Loyalty is a two way street. If fans demand loyalty from players, then fans should demonstrate loyalty to the players.
