A slower possession receiver who can get open and has hands is worth his weight in gold (DeAndre Smelter). Super-fast guys who can't get open and have suspect hands are not (nave any of 100 guys that you know of). Fast guys who get open and have hands are valuable, too (Malik Rutherford).

Man, it’s really hard to express this opinion without it coming off like I’m trying to bash the kid and I genuinely am not, but I genuinely don’t get why his value is considered so high. I’ve watched him play for two seasons and my first thought when I think of him is “drops the ball” and my second thought is “fast”. Again, I genuinely don’t mean it as a bash, but he has not put up superstar numbers for us. That’s superstar pay.
I think this is the way we're all feeling. I'd probably switch the order to fast and then drops though.

That being said, I definitely like Singleton and what he brings a lot (and obviously wish he'd stay), but if that kind of money is out there it's hard to be mad about him going for it.

The problem is, we don't know if the number is true, how it is structured, or what other portal WRs are getting. It's probably high, but maybe it's not as high as we think. The NIL world feels like a black box right now. We get little droplets of info here and there but have no idea about the bigger picture.

I believe the apparent offers and publicity that Singleton is getting is a testament to GT’s improved media presence this year.
There’s got to be a connection between our viewership numbers and Singleton being at the top of the Portal lists.

And it looks like Boise State is about to. I don’t think any scouts are concerned about Ashton Jeanty’s strength of schedule.

(And our strength of schedule was higher than Alabama’s in 2022)

Gibbs went to Alabama for a number of reasons. Is there really any evidence he got picked higher in the draft there than he would have here?

Keep in mind, 5* players tend to get drafted. Despite his high school ranking, he was a 5*
I always hear in my head the phrase "what do we think, what do we know, what can we prove." Those are often three very different things. Nearly everything in this discussion fits into the "what do we think" category. And that's totally cool. That is exactly what discussion boards are for and I love the sharing of opinions and reasons why people think what they do. There's a lot of great thoughts here. But very little fits into "what do we know" much less "what can we prove." And I don't mean all of this to be in response to just you @slugboy it's just your post that I replied to.

My own opinion is that the guys who are obviously top level talent will be found by the NFL wherever they are. It's possible some of them will be drafted a bit higher if they are on a team PERCEIVED to be better or PERCEIVED to play more often against tougher competition simply because there's a lot of bias by the people making decisions. But most of the time they'll still get drafted high. And the kids that are at schools considered to be lower level who were awesome on the field against perceived weaker opponents and are also freakish athletes will get drafted because they have those freakish measurables to go along with performance on the field and there will be teams, especially in the middle to lower rounds, who will gamble on those kids. I also believe that some of the kids believe they have a better chance of getting drafted if they are at one of those big name schools. Who knows if they are right or wrong. So much of this is based on perception.

BTW speaking of Ashton Jeanty... had he been playing at a school in the SEC or B1G I think nobody would be even considering strength of schedule when arguing whether he deserves the Heisman or Travis Hunter should get it. Not saying he would win if he was on an SEC or B1G team. Just saying that aspect of the argument against him would go away. Personally I'm in awe of the guy and if I had a Heisman vote he'd get it. And I also agree that most scouts won't care what the strength of schedule was for Boise State.

Fun challenge... who can guess which movie it was that I saw that phrase used on a chalkboard (yes, a chalkboard, not even a whiteboard). I'll give you a hint. It does not involve lawyers or innocence and guilt of any kind.

Considering that the assertion is that he needed to go to Alabama to get drafted in the first round, it seems like what needs to be proven is that Bama would provide that significant a bump.
Not that they get players drafted—if you reliably have top 10 recruiting classes and highly rated transfer classes, you’re expected to get players drafted. What needs to be shown is the same player at Bama gets drafted higher than if they were at Cal or Penn State

Yeah, if that number is accurate, I can’t blame him and he always represented us well while he was here. The only decision he can make that will get sour grapes from me is going to that other school in Georgia.

Hopefully, he weighs all options and decides to stay.

$2 million is life changing money for anyone that age, and a nice security blanket in case of injury. If it's true, Key needs to tell him to run not walk through the Portal.

However, I think it may be more Twitter hype than reality. I do, however think he's going to get A LOT more money elsewhere than he will get at GT (unfortunately).

It's an assertion that can't be backed up just like your assertion that Bama didn't help him. There's no PROOF of either position in the discussion. There's reasonable thoughts and opinions but nothing is known. It's all opinion. There's not any way to prove either side. Did so many players from Alabama get drafted because they went to Alabama? Well it should be plainly obvious to even someone who got a C in Statistics like me that, as you rightly pointed out, the more players who come into your system rated highly the more likely it is that you're going to win more games and that you're going to have more players go on to the next level. Sure some of them will be busts but unless you're as completely incompetent as Ron Rivera and his "braintrust" was with Washington you're probably going to hit on at least a few of them.

Well, you have to forgive @Techster . He's a little out of touch with the common man. Per my sources, he's so rich he'll only eat ice cream if it was frozen using ice from the peak of Mt. Everest.

Singleton was featured in today's The Athletic article about players in the portal. Notable quote: “He’s a seven-figure receiver,” an SEC personnel director said.
If that's really what he is being offered, I can understand him looking around. I can also understand Tech's position if we don't want to match it.
Not sure what he was paid last season, but let’s assume it was $500k. That’s a $500k raise. For those worried about the education tradeoff, that’s about 7-10 years of salary that he can get in one year, right now. If a company wanted to double my salary I would quit my job.

I don't know if the number is accurate, but I have no reason to doubt the quote. The Athletic is not some yokel's Twitter account.

As I said in my response to @iceeater1969, I suspect we have a maximum amount we are willing to pay to keep a guy on the roster, depending on position and player's contribution. Perhaps Singleton and/or his agent wanted more than our ceiling.

These bidding wars are what was feared when NIL first hit the scene.
Didn’t we just hire someone to a new position that is hired to sort this sort of stuff out?

That's not true at all. The peak of Mt. Everest isn't cold enough for my ice cream...
