Singleton to Portal

I would say the odds of that are very very small. There are lots of reports across media of interest and bag offers from other teams...if even half of them are true then the die is cast. Is what it is, I have every faith that when we kick off in August we will have at least 85 players who will give it their best shot.
Singleton was featured in today's The Athletic article about players in the portal. Notable quote: “He’s a seven-figure receiver,” an SEC personnel director said.
If that's really what he is being offered, I can understand him looking around. I can also understand Tech's position if we don't want to match it.

Assume we have paid bonuses to Key Batt because they plan on making gt football better.

Are we paying them to make us feeder school to sec?

I have plenty of issuses with Singleton ( route running compared to stockton, great top end speed but question his acceleration after cut to get open, etc) so are we getting HAYNES some one to replace Singleton

Why? Gibbs looked at least as electric here, with worse blocking. He was an afterthought at Bama. He was showcased better here, even with TFG, than he was at Bama

Clearly, BKE is saying that playing at Bama didn’t help Gibbs in draft selection—and I don’t think it did
I’m gonna go ahead and agree to disagree and just say I’m shocked with these opinions. I’d say looking electric against SEC defenses and standing out at Bama while surrounded by other electric talent helped prove his talent. In comparison to playing for 2021 GT against Syracuse and VT. Why has no one mentioned the quality of defenses he faced? Or transferring helped him avoid injury when we saw him legitimately get destroyed vs Georgia? Why is “box score” what we’re going to?

He went to Bama to be in the Heisman conversation, and he wasn’t the featured athlete there—Bryce Young was.

Look at NFL drafts—Alabama running backs have a reputation of not performing well in the pros.

That last statement is just not accurate at all. There are like 5 of them that’s either starting running backs now or major contributors like Gibbs. For every Trent Richardson from Bama there’s a Shaun Alexander or even TJ Yeldon or Eddie Lacy to a lesser extent. Bama has put some really good backs in the league.

I have no idea if that number is accurate of not.

If the reports are true that he came to our coaches or the NIL collective asking for more money and we said no, I wonder if we did that out of principle or that we couldn't come up with that amount. There are reports that he did the same thing after last season and we met his demands or at least got close enough to keep him. We may have just decided that we weren't going to continue to be held hostage after every season and are setting an example.

Not sure if that would be the correct way to handle NIL going forward but I could see that as a strategy.

Are you talking about his game against Syracuse or VT? Or the one against UVA? He did produce against Duke!
I'm talking about all the games, of course, while you're cherry-picking. Pre-season SOS ranking in Gibbs' final season at Tech. Alabama's #19. Tech is # 3:

My thinking is that we only have so much NIL $$ to spread around. Each position/player is evaluated in terms of value to the program. I suspect Key, at this point in his rebuild, is still valuing linemen high enough to cut into what's available for skill players.

I don't know if the number is accurate, but I have no reason to doubt the quote. The Athletic is not some yokel's Twitter account.

As I said in my response to @iceeater1969, I suspect we have a maximum amount we are willing to pay to keep a guy on the roster, depending on position and player's contribution. Perhaps Singleton and/or his agent wanted more than our ceiling.

These bidding wars are what was feared when NIL first hit the scene.

I thought this year the total was going from 85 to 105 or is that still a few years from now

I figured I didn’t even have to include him. They’ve got Josh Jacobs, Najee Harris, Brian Harris, all starting/major contributors to their ball clubs. Heck, Jerome Ford in Cleveland…and to a much much lesser extent the falcons #3 guy is Chase McClellan. I’m nowhere near a Bama fan (in fact I hat em unless they are playing Georgia), but they put very good running backs in the NFL.

I expect we will replace him ok, may be something slightly different that can be just as effective in its own way. He had his faults, raw speed certainly was not one of them. I have confidence in CBK and company knowing what they are looking at and doing, where we are going etc. We'll be good with or without him IMO.

Wasn't Gibbs all ACC all purpose back his sophomore year? Never will forget the kickoff he almost broke for a td against UCF (I think that was the game). It was his first game at GT. Kid was special in space.
