Sims and Turnovers

After six weeks Sims leads the nation in fumbles (6), fumbles lost (4) and is second in the nation in interceptions. It’s hard enough to win when you turn the ball over, but if you add to this that we have a historically bad defense it’s near impossible. He’s got to clean this up or we may not win again.

Some of the tipped balls weren’t his fault, but there’s plenty of poor decisions mixed in as well. Dropping the ball on snaps is just concentration and needs to get corrected quickly.

Youth comes into play here, but what can coaches do to help a young guy having this problem?

For lack of a better term, he is too loosy goosy with the ball. Freshman or not, he needs to value the ball more and not be so careless. I’m not so sure that we won’t see Gleason be the QB of the future but as a team and coaching we have a bunch to clean up which includes Sims.

You sit him down until he learns to protect the football. He's got all the talent in the world but it doesn't mean a thing if you keep turning it over. "Better to have died as a small boy than to fumble this football."

Wrong you coach him our QB coach is up in the booth he needs to be on the field to tell him what he sees and what he did wrong. May mean he has to sit out one series and then you put him back in the game. Plus it will give you a back up QB that will get some playing time and can learn.

Go back and watch this. These are game changing plays that have been happening way too often. Drive killers, momentum killers, offense can’t stay on the field. He’s simply struggling bad right now, it’s time for Gleason to get his chance.

If that’s true and daddy is already thumb sucking and wanting to quit after 6 games then let him. I’m sure he’s just frustrated currently like all of us.

Most of us saw Sims stare down a receiver blanketed in double coverage on the 10 yard line and throw him the ball anyway. A couple of things to take away from that

1. Sims doesn’t lack for confidence at all
2. That’s the kind of throw that Aaron Rogers and Brett Farve make/made (and where Farve threw ints and drove his coaches nuts). It’s also the kind of throw almost everyone else gets an int from.
3. By blanketed, I mean a defender in front and a defender behind. You couldn’t miss them.
4. He stared down his receiver the entire way. He should have realized someone else at least had single coverage if they weren’t running entirely free. He had plenty of time to check down and didn’t.

What a lot of people didn’t notice is Graham coming in and staring down a receiver in double coverage in the 4th—a similar play and similar action, but no int and no completion. I’m not sure which QB is going through progressions, but it’s not just Sims who isn’t

Turning the football over isn't really a coaching issue. It is pretty simple really. Hold on to football. Don't throw football to other team. I guess that advice makes me an expert football coach.

Not a talent issue.

Sims is having issues not only protecting the ball but going through his progressions, which is expected of a true freshman. Right now he is very much a 1 read and throw or take off. It makes it easier for defenses to defend when that is what they are facing regarding our offense right now. Our scheme is also not very creative or dynamic. We get very little separation to give Sims options should he progress through his reads.

I like Tucker, but between Sims and the QB we have coming in next season, I'm not worried about the QB position. Chayden Peery may be our most talented passer we've signed in a while. He doesn't have the athleticism Tucker or Sims has, but you don't need to be Lamar Jackson to be an effective runner. If you tell me we'll get 65%+ completion and 50-75 more yards passing a game I'll take less running production from our QB...especially with the stable of RBs we have.

Good programs that recruit well have talented kids that leave all the time. It's not anything negative against the kid that's leaving, you can only play one QB at a time...but if we're signing talented QBs, you just wish the kid well and keep the talent pipeline moving.

Well half the fumbles are credited to him even though they were bad snaps. He nearly leads the country in interceptions because he was throwing 3 per game. He’s had 2 interceptions in the last 3 games combined. That’s completely manageable when he’s scoring 3 TDs per game. There are also very very few true freshmen playing quarterback in the country.

Yup. Sims completed 2/3rds of his passes yesterday, put up 220 yards of offense and 3 TDs, and didn’t play the final 20% of the game. 27 points in 80% of a game puts you in position to win most games. And we faked a punt on BCs 29 because...well, that’s not Sims’ fault.

Apparently Tucker’s Dad posted something in the Rivals game pages (page 34 they say on Twitter) for what’s going on with him.

Man I hate the bad snap excuse in shotgun formation. The ball isn’t always going to be delivered directly into your hands. QB has to get the ball. Was yesterday a bad snap? What about the one against Clemson? If you can get your hands on it then it’s on you as a QB to secure the ball.
