Silver Lining: Philo redshirt in tact

King threw the ball very fast in many cases which I am not sure a freshman would pick up. Also he hung in the pocket with players all around him. Both of those take a lot of experience.
King's decision making was about as good as a QB can do. He made made only a couple of questionable decisions in an 8 OT game against an excellent defense. Nothing but praise for King!

I look done this morning and I’m not the one that got hit 30 times last night, nor am I the one who worked years for a game like that to see it taken away by a combination of officiating, injuries, and play calling. He’s a warrior and I fully expect he’ll be back next year.

I love the game HfK played. He was outstanding.

But he might have suffered a concussion with 2 minutes to go. Philo has the better skillset to optimize the last minute of regulation.

In hindsight, I wish we could have used Philo situationally. That is not intended as a slight against King in any way.

There’s just so much wrong with this thinking. King’s game decisions are next worldly. Philo missed so many reads in the NCST game. He’s going to be awesome in the future, but right now, there‘s no comparison, and that’s not a knock on Philo. King is that good.

Should we just go with
Let the back up qb play each year.
" By definition the back up has so much potential".

So what do we make of HK ? He looked done last night at press conference. At some point the injuries get to you. Not sure he has another surgery/recovery/season in him?
that was an exhausting game, mentally and physically. and if you watched it, he said he is tired of coming up short, and took the loss squarely on his shoulders.

give the kid a break.

So you believe there wasn't a single situation in last night's game where Philo's ability to throw could have helped us win?

Not even one spot?

No. HK was pretty damn stellar last night. Don’t remember but two throws that were off (no QB is perfect). There was never a time in the entire game where I thought “maybe Philo would be better in this situation.” I know you didn’t ask me, but there you go. You get an answer from me anyhow.

King put up more production solely through the air than Philo did against a much weaker opponent.

Philo looks to have all the potential in the world, but he has not produced in a game like that, and hasn’t faced that level of competition.

Agree.

But I wonder if we would have won if he plays last night. Either with 1 minute to go in regulation (with two timeouts!) to get us into field goal range.

Or as a change of pace in any of the OTs...

I gotta admit, I really hated the 1st play of that 1 min drive. Qb run up the gut for zero yards and lost 15 seconds off the clock.

King was a true warrior all game and left it all on the field. And I am glad Philo kept his shirt. But in that last chance to get in FG range, Philo was our better option with his stronger arm over a worn out and battered Haynes King if his redshirt was not an issue, in my opinion. Also would have let King rest and prepare mentally for OT if needed.

Philo may have ice water in his veins, but you don't find out in a rivalry game in an extremely hostile environment with the game on the line. King was magnificent Friday night. At the end he was exhausted, as were all the players on both sides, but he simple turned in probably the best all-around QB performance I have ever witnessed in a GT uniform. That includes Joe and Shawn, and all the rest.

It is an unspeakable shame he did not win that game.
