THE FLATS - Georgia Tech publicly unveiled plans on Monday for Phase II of renovations to Russ Chandler Stadium, the home of Georgia Tech baseball.

Phase II of the Russ Chandler Stadium renovations are driven by Georgia Tech athletics' vision for its nationally renowned baseball program -- to enhance player development, to improve fan experience and to celebrate the Yellow Jackets' rich baseball history. Planned renovations include:

  • a new, expanded indoor training facility, which will include three 20-foot-wide batting cages, two 10-foot-wide pitching tunnels and a video analysis room. The facility will be adjacent to the Yellow Jackets' dugout and heated/air-conditioned for year-round use;

  • an alumni locker room that will be available to former letterwinners in pro baseball as they utilize the new, expanded indoor training facility during the offseason;

  • upgraded fan amenities, including all-new restroom facilities and concession stands, a premium club area and an outdoor plaza;

  • a concourse-level atrium that will house a new Georgia Tech Baseball Hall of Fame. It will serve as an iconic point of entry to Russ Chandler Stadium and be open to the public on gamedays. On non-gamedays, the atrium will convert into a 40-seat teaching auditorium for Tech baseball.
"Phase I of our Russ Chandler Stadium renovation, which was completed in 2015, has been quite successful in taking us toward our goal of having a world-class facility for a world-class baseball program through significant enhancements to our locker room, lounge area, athletics training room and study room," Georgia Tech director of athletics Todd Stansbury said. "Now it's time to begin Phase II. We thank those who have already generously contributed to the project and ask those who haven't to please consider doing so, as we aim to continue to attract and develop top-notch student-athletes, enhance our fan experience and celebrate the history of baseball at Tech."

The total cost of the Phase II project is $9 million. $6.5 million of the $9 million needed to fund the project has already been committed - $4.5 million in the form of a matching gift established by a generous anonymous donor and $2 million in additional gifts.

Georgia Tech athletics has set a goal of raising the final $2.5 million needed to fully fund the project by December 31, 2018.

"I'm really excited about the announcement of Phase II of the Russ Chandler Stadium renovation project," Georgia Tech head coach Danny Hall said. "Phase I was done primarily with our student-athletes in mind, to enhance their daily lives while being a baseball player at Georgia Tech. Phase II is about enhancing our fan experience at Georgia Tech, in addition to continuing to enhance our player development.

"Ultimately, Phase II is going to help us in recruiting," Hall continued. "It keeps us out at the front in college baseball in terms of what our facilities look like. We're blessed to play in Russ Chandler Stadium and to have the support of our administration here at Georgia Tech. We're blessed that many of our former student-athletes have stepped up and gotten this project off the ground. Now we need some help from the rest of our Georgia Tech family and the Tech community to see this project to completion."

I don't care how rich you are, $4.5 million is $4.5 million. I believe his contract that covered most of his career was 8 years $180 million. After state/local/fed taxes, that's probably $100 million. Assuming he spent a good bit of that money here and there, he probably gave 10% of his entire net worth away. Thank you Mark!
