I don't know the rules of rugby, but it was fascinating to watch while in Australia years ago. Given the constant action and when watching with droves of spectators who are fanatical, I found it a much more enjoyable sport to watch than football (only ~15 min of game action over several hours by comparison).

I love that the rules are easy—pass backwards, if only by an eyelash
You can kick it forwards
If the ball touches the ground in the field of play, it’s a scrum (a mosh pit) where two people with a diminished sense of self preservation fight for the ball at the bottom of the pile
If you get stopped dead, same thing as the ball touching the ground
The score (try) happens where the ball touches in the end zone. You can kick the extra point directly behind where you touched down, so try to touch down in the middle
It’s so much easier to explain than football

But, if you’ve watched once, you know all this. One match is all you need
