I wasn't always supportive of political beliefs, but as a human heis a good man and will be missed. His contribution to bettering lives of his fellow man is unmatched. Had the honor of shaking his hand at the Calhoun airport with his brother Billy.

I believe President Carter came to the Student Center in the 1979. I recall waiting with the crowd for the group to leave the ballroom and walk downstairs. That was a fun moment for me, waving as he came down.

Later in life, I had the opportunity to be on 2 flights with President Carter. He walked down the aisle and shaked everyone's hand. It was an honor for me both times. On one, I was in first class where he sat (a few rows back) and had a chance to chat with the Secret Service personnel during the flight. On the other flight, I recall the person that I was sitting next to saying that he personally didn't like Carter as a President however appreciated him as a humanitarian for his post Presidency work.

I believe the song, "May the works I've done, speak for me" is appropriate for President Carter. He was a Great man! May he rest in peace.

Proud to say I was privileged to shake his hand in the Governor's office, a treat for working on a state senate campaign. The Carter Center is a great foundation and will continue his work:

Sad day. Wonderful person. Did a lot of good in his time on earth

Amen, Slug. A distant cousin, our common 5th great grandparents came from England to Virginia in the early 1700's and made their way to Southwest Georgia in the early 1800's. We called him Jimmy, and some even Jimmy Earl, when he was a guest preacher at ou'rt Baptist Church in Cairo and when we sold peanuts to his family peanut plant in Plains. Like many top students in the rural schools in the area, he went to Tech out of a class of 25 at Plains High in our basketball region. Wanting to be a nuclear engineer during the war and applied to the Naval Academy, he was not selected until during his freshman year at Tech in 1944. After his service in the Navy and as a state congressman, Jimmy was Georgia governor in 1971 and attended several basketball games before I graduated in 1972. We stayed in touch throughout the years. He was always a Tech Man at heart and regretted not being able to come to our Veterans Day basketball game in 2016 in recognition of our military veterans associated with Georgia Tech. This was Josh's first game at Tech. Jimmy was the best human being who happened to be the 39th President of the United States.

RIP President Carter.

In 1974-75 my wife and I were excited that a Georgian was running for president. Also, my wife knew Jack Carter's first wife.

We attended Carter's campaign kick-off at the Little White House in Warm Springs, GA. I remember one of President Roosevelt's Sons attended the event.

After the event was over, we drove towards Gallaway Gardens where we planned to spend the night. On the way, I noticed a pretty large building off the road which I decided must be a restaurant. We drove up and went in and were surprised to be greeted by Miss Lillian. She asked if we were Carter people, and we said yes. She invited us in. I could tell (or sensed) that this was likely an invitation only function, probably for donors. As nicely as I could, I said we felt that we would be intruding and didn't feel comfortable joining the group. I still regret that I didn't accept that offer.

I have always admired President Carter's great character and work ethic.

We have not seen anything like his peace efforts in the Middle East either before or since, essentially turning two of Israel’s enemies into allies. His handling of the Panama Canal Treaty was masterful, peacefully transitioning a power keg into a stable region of the country. So many unprecedented accomplishments in the 20th century.

Like those of you who have already commented, I too was struck by how humble and gracious he was in person. I still have “Keeping Faith” with his personal hand written note.

There are several documentaries about his life but one that’s a lot of fun is “Jimmy Carter: Rock and Roll President.” There are some great stories about his relationships with various musical giants and their visits to the White House.

Some may not be aware of a situation that led to President Carter being involved in helping the EDGE athletic facility become a reality.

I will set this up as briefly as I can. Kim King was Chairman of the fund-raising committee for the Edge Center. Kim had asked Coach Dodd to become the Honorary Chairman of the committee. Coach Dodd felt like the campaign was likely to fail due to the weak economy at the time and the lack of support from the Tech Administration and he declined the position. Kim enlisted the help of Ewell Pope to help him convince Coach Dodd to take the position. Pope was one of Dodd's favorite players. Even Pope could not convince Coach Dodd to join the campaign.

Coach Dodd eventually joined the effort and helped raise a great deal of money for the project. Kim relates a story about how he and Coach Dodd went to Houston, Texas and raised $1.25 million from two oilmen and one construction company owner. Both were old friends of Dodd.

For the story on how Coach Dodd was convinced to join the campaign by President Carter, see the attached pages from Kim King's Book, "Tales from the Georgia Tech Sideline". Hugh Carter (President Carter's Cousin and GT Alum) was very involved also.

I personally have some mixed feelings about President Carter and his contributions over the years. Some were notably wonderful, others….less so. He was an optimist, that’s for sure….seeing the best in people (sometimes even when it wasn’t there). I do not doubt that he really meant to do the best, worked very VERY hard at it, and wanted the best outcomes always. There are tons of others in politics and DC for whom that cannot be said, and for that I respect him and thank him (even where I disagreed with him).
RIP, President Carter.
