If we are losing Kyle and do want to keep Kerce at 3B, this is a good option if we could get him:

Wideman entered the portal. Seems odd figured he’d get drafted in the first few rounds.

I thought Ford was draft eligible this year.
In the NIL era it might be a better payday to stay in college another year and improve your skills as opposed to bouncing around on busses in the minor leagues. Both these guys will probably get drafted but seeing what money they might get in the portal and comparing that to their draft slot gives them options. It might also improve their draft slot if teams realize they have to compete against NIL deals to sign the prospect.

It's a double edged sword these days. Yes, you may be able to make more money with NIL for an extra year in college, but what do you give up in terms of player development in a major league team's system. Most college programs, dare I say all college programs, do not have the resources to develop talent as the worst major league franchise. I initially said most because there are some teams you just don't want to go to (Rockies as a pitcher anyone???).

Baseball is unusual in the fact that unlike football or basketball, if you get drafted you can go back to school. So there should be no hesitation to play the transfer portal and the MLB draft at the same time. See where you may end up in both cases and make your decision from there.

Peyton Green - Kyle Lodise - Tyler Lichtenberger or the Stanford Shortstop Baccera let’s keep the trend going. Kerce is a great third baseman not sure about his range as a shortstop.

I'm all for that, but what makes you question his range? He's a natural SS who is playing 3B bc we've had two stud upperclassmen at SS his first two years. When he's had to fill in at SS he's done an exceptional job.

Page and Marcos happened before the season. Marcos played at GA Highlands this season.

Evans and Royer are probably the biggest surprises.

Agreed. Royer especially. Early in the season I thought he showed the most promise of the freshman arms. Have to think he made this decision earlier in the season and that's why we stopped seeing him.

Evans was a highly touted LHP. Only got in two games on the mound. Would've been nice to have kept and developed him. He also got in 14 games as a defensive replacement and/or pinch runner.

Josh Evans to portal....

10 freshmen in the portal on day 2. Always saying "we have a top recruiting class coming in," but then they all leave. DEVELOP THEM. You wanted them. You asked them to come to GT over other programs.

Half of these kids made their mind up in April.

We had 5 freshmen play significant roles on the offense. I think we did ok. In this portal era this is the norm. If you don't get playing time, you transfer. Not to mention we don't know how these kids are adjusting to an extremely difficult school. It's not always baseball.

Honestly I’ve yet to see Tech lose a talented freshman in the portal era. The last one that was a back breaker was Micah Owings way before the Wild West..

I do agree with you, you just hate to lose young arms that might develop. Though if you look at the guys who have left. Finateri and Schomlke were ok, both with ERA above 4. But most of the guys who have left haven't really done much.

Pitching is a question we obviously haven't found an answer to.

You see most of the top arms from hs go in the draft. Then you rarely see a freshman come in and make a significant impact. When they do those teams find themselves in good situations (hasn't happened to us in a while).

Schulman is supposed to be a superb pitching recruiter. What I heard exactly is that he's the pitching equivalent of Ramsey when it comes to recruiting. If he's that, we're going to see some good things very soon. We hired him in July of last year, so this will be his first real full recruiting cycle and we have some guys that look to be very good.

I think getting a couple of really good arms in the portal would go a long way this offseason. Then get these kids on campus and let's see what happens.

Last year's class wasn't really pitcher heavy at the top. Musci was the highest rated and he was coming off of injury I think. I think he was the only PG10 and maybe even the only one above a PG9. The incoming class has 2 PG10s and a 9.5. The trick will be making sure we get them on campus and don't lose them to the draft. Getting highly touted hs pitchers on campus is tough.
