Question for the old folks: Did you ever get to meet Coach Dodd? Have any stories?

We are 100 days from toe meeting leather! I interviewed Coach Cremins for my podcast (working on editing that right now) and one of the things I did was ask him about various Tech people. I asked him about Homer Rice, Al Ciraldo, and of course, Bobby Dodd. Cremins told me a fun story. It was summer of 1981, shortly after he had been hired to turn a struggling hoops program around. As Cremins is walking out of the old GTAA building, he sees a familiar face walking in, the Gray Fox himself. He goes up to introduce himself saying "Hello Mr. Dodd. I'm the new head men's basketball coach." Dodd swiftly responds with "I know who you are, Cremins!" Even in retirement Dodd was well aware of what was occurring in the athletic department.

Were any of you fortunate enough to have met, or had a conversation/relationship with the old Coach himself? I am proud of Coach Key, as even with the craziness of NIL I feel that if Bobby Dodd was here today he would be able to recognize the GT football program. We still do things the right way, the Dodd way, while adapting to this modern era. We graduate a majority of our players, we develop our players into good men off the field (cough cough, Athens), and we win a good amount on the field.

Interested to hear your stories, and once again we are 100 days to kickoff!

Can you even imagine today a basketball letterwinner's banquet at the Capital City Club, with the head basketball coach playing the piano and the athletic director and a basketball All-American as well as academic All-American, singing along. 1971 was AD Dodd's and GT's then most winning year in Tech's history in all sports. My only scheduled meeting and conversation was about a football tackle sitting behind me in the auditorium in biology class, reaching forward, with me in front of him and pulling out and copying my study notes. A warning ensued and all was well. Yunkus and Thorne are in the GT Sports Hall of Fame. The team was close to the athletic department. Jim Thorne married assistant AD John McKenna's daughter. AD Dodd hired Coach Hyder as Tech's head basketball coach in 1951, twenty years before this picture in 1971. Assistant football coach Bobby Dodd also was Whack's freshman basketball coach in 1933, his assistant baseball coach, as well as his football coach. Coach and AD relationships like that are unamiginable today as well.

I met Coach Dodd during recruiting trip in fall of '72...then ran into him around the AA many times...He always smiled, spoke, remembered my name... Interestingly, I never remember him visiting our locker room or on the sidelines during home games....
When we hired Bill in '80, Coach Dodd hosted a party for him and I was, for some reason, invited.... Coach Dodd spent most of that evening with his arm around my 23-yr old wife... Bobby D loved the ladies....
Interesting footnote to that party... one of our boosters who was present hired a stripper to come dressed as a policewoman...as she began to dis-robe, Bill stood up, walked out, got in his car and left.
Awkward moment, to say the least...
Carolyn then stands up and says, "Well, there went my ride. Can someone take me home?" Barbara and I volunteered immediately. Never saw BD again....

That is too funny

Whatever booster did that did not know Bill Curry at all 😂

He’s probably the LAST person who would ever enjoy something like that.
