Question About Line Play

I never played the game, so this is a serious question. Let me set it up first.

In basketball, if you can take your man, the team knows it and gets you the ball. Conversely, if your man can take you, then the you and your teammates have to adjust.

What about football? After 2 or 3 series have been played, are the linemen open and honest with the coaches about whether they can beat their man when push comes to shove? So that the OC knows whether or not to call a critical play behind that lineman or into that gap?

I can see a guy saying, "I got this guy...just follow my block"...but what about, "I've got my hands full, coach...I can slow him down some, but he's quick (or big or whatever)", etc., etc.

Yes, the coaches are watching, but what, if anything, are the players saying to them?
