Hawes has a nice role primarily as an additional blocking TE for the Bills. He is in on a lot of snaps. Huge 29 yard reception to the 1 yard line during the Bills crazy comeback. Two TDs and a last play FG to win 41-40.

Creditable performance by Jordan Mason last night in a comeback win by Minnesota:

News: 9 hours ago Mason rushed 15 times for 68 yards and brought in his only target for seven yards in the Vikings' 27-24 win over the Bears on Monday night.

Spin: Mason comfortably led the Vikings in rush attempts and rushing yards, outpacing the only other running back to log a carry, Aaron Jones, by seven carries and 45 yards. The Week 1 usage between the two players is eye-catching to say the least, considering Jones is the established incumbent of the ground attack under a returning coaching staff. Nevertheless, Mason is a proven commodity as an offseason addition, and head coach Kevin O'Connell may be most comfortable affording the latter the bulk of early-down work on most weeks. The next opportunity to see how the pecking order shakes out comes in a Week 2 home matchup against the Falcons on Sunday night.

Watching the game last night, I thought Mason was the better consistent runner and got a lot of yards after contact. Jones has big play potential because of his speed and quickness...which is better than Mason's. Jones had a great receiving TD. Mason is just a workhorse you know is going to get you 3-5+ yards every carry and will break the occassional 10+ yard run. He sees the lane better, and anticipates the blocking lanes better than Jones.

They're just two different types of RBs. Both can hurt you in different ways. I'm glad Mason is finally getting a chance to get more carries.

Kind of reminds me there was a long tradition back in the day having two backs who were “lightning and thunder,” one who would run over people and one who would run past people. Anyone remember Mercury Morris and Larry Csonka?

Mason had a better rushing average than McCaffrey at San Fran. I'd like to see Minnesota utilize him a little more than the 49ers did in the passing game (McCaffrey got most of the targets out of the backfield there). Of course, a lot depends on the OL, and I see the Vikings have the 5th best rated unit in the NFL this year, at least by one analysis:

Of course, Mason's value is enhanced by his own blocking ability.
