I see White and Clayton on the field at same time some of the time, not sure how we do it, but a lot to handle for any offensive line IMO. Thought I saw them trying Harris at LB some this spring. We have a lot of potential mixtures with our defense that could be hard to handle IMO. Came away from the two practices I attended thinking our defense could be a nice surprise this year, the problem being defense does not count near as much in todays game.

My take on how the depth chart will shake out to start the year:

OFFENSE:
QB: Sims, Yates
RB: Gibbs, Mason/Smith
WR: Carter, Boyd
WR: Sanders, Harris/Blackburn
Slot: McGowen, McCollum
TE: Leonard, Deveney
LT: Cochran, Leftwich
LG: Smith, Pendley
C: Minihan, Smith
RG: Johnson, Kirby
LT: Williams, Kirby

DEFENSE:
SDE: Clayton, White/ Ivey
DT: Lockhart, Chimedza
DT: Brooks, Griffin
WDE: Domineck, Harris/Kennard
LB: Quez, Tatum
LB: Eley, Thomas
CB: Swilling, Brooks
CB: Walton, KW2/Sims
NB: Walker, KW2
S: Juanyeh, Allen
S: Tariq, Edwards/King
Only things I would change are ezzard over Boyd. I think whoever doesn’t win the RT starting spot between Williams and Kirby will slide into the left guard spot. Kirby is too good to keep off the field, he had some draft interest. Migjt would Chimedza over Lockhart IF he’s healthy, that’s a big IF.

I’ve seen B12 and AAC and other offense-dominated conferences have defenses focused on big plays, batting the ball, and turnovers. It’s riskier, but if a bend but don’t break still “breaks” for you, why not gamble?

Oh my dear sweet baby Jesus. No thanks to any defense played by any B12 team. In fact, that may be an oxymoron. The B12 is arena football played in the prairie states of this great nation. Great crops, good hunting, and absolutely no defensive football allowed in that region. ;)

It hasn’t been a great strategy against Ohio State, Clemson, or Alabama. It does seem to be an adjustment to survive in some conferences though.

Is Kenny Cooper not healthy?

Rankins was highly rated (No. 44-ranked offensive tackle in the nation and the No. 73-ranked player in the state of Florida--which would be like top 50 in Geogia). Is he not in the mix at OL? he has been in the program for 2 years--not sure why he would behind true Fr Leftwich.

I think many of the T-FR2 OL will play this year. Some may be limited to 4 games.

Not a fan of the "cute" narrative. Gibbs runs hard. In fact, the only data I've seen suggests he runs as hard as anyone.

Ex:

I think Gibbs runs hard, but a lot of his broken tackles are from breaking ankles and making guys miss and only get a hand or a few fingers on him. Compared with Mason, who breaks tackles running through defenders.

I plan to go camping this summer on the prairie in West Virginia. Isn't that where Willa Cather based her novels? (sarcasm alert)

Good point about Cooper, I forgot to include him. He will probably be in that LG and C rotation but Smith was getting the most 1st team reps there this Spring. From what I heard Rankins is still very raw and has potential but probably won’t be a big factor this year unless he steps up in Fall camp. I think Leftwich could be similar to Williams but luckily we will be able to take him along slowly due to more depth at OT.

Boyd is a guy I’m really high on but would definitely like to see Ezzard more this year. Hopefully both will step up and play big roles

Boyd gives you a nice combination of size and speed. He is one of the fastest wr's we have on the team and gives you a deep threat we do not have with some of the more experienced wr's. I would not be surprised if he pushed for a starting spot towards the latter half of the season.

His high point catch in the Spring game is what sold me on him. Reminds me of Jalen Camp with even more speed. We’re going to need him, King, or one of the freshman step up to give us a passing threat outside of Carter, Kyric, and Gibbs. My money is on Blackburn or Boyd
