Broken hip is one of the biggest risks for increased mortality in the elderly. Lots of complications possible and the limited mobility has lots of downstream effects. Very sad how rapidly someone can go from healthy and lively to debilitated from a fall
Falls are actually the single highest cause of death in the elderly. Not necessarily the fall itself, but the complications. As a PT, and as a son , I saw this up close.
PSA: have those close to you consider using a cane, or walker. As I told my patients- “No one PLANS to fall”.
May he RIP.

This is so true. More than once I have seen someone enjoying their golden years only to fall and either be dead within the year or end up in assisted living with dementia.

Charlotte Fox is one of the craziest examples of this I've ever seen. World class skier and mountain climber, first American woman to climb three 8000m peaks, survived a climb on Everest that left 8 others dead (Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer is about this), all to die at 61 falling down the stairs at her home.

I did not know she had died. The Krakauer book was powerful.

Prayers to the Smart family.

Not sure if this is the correct thread to mention this, but in the spirit of setting aside fun sports rivalries for more important life matters, I do like that in a season where so many fights broke out at rivalry games, our heavily competitive rivalry game ended in a hug between the two head coaches.

Kirby Smart's Dad died on Saturday after an accidental fall in New Orleans ahead of their game. Per the AP, the cause of death was related to complications following a hip surgery to repair damage from the fall.

(mod. note: Hurricane posted this in the Lounge. Thought it was important enough to move over to this thread...)
Thanks Mods!

The loss of my father is a loss that I'll never fully recover from - and that was a little over 15 years ago. Everyone's relationships with their parents are different, but it seemed like Kirby was close with his father. It's hard to lose a loved one under any circumstances, but the way he passed had to be bewildering. I hope his family can now have some time to accept the loss, grieve his passing and celebrate his life.
