As a youth coach I can say the opposite happens, too, unfortunately.

Absolutely, especially on D. Some players look really good in drills but in a game cannot find the ball or get off blocks. Anticipation and pursuit angles also are in play. I believe practice is a better game performance predictor for O than for D.
