16 or 32, no byes in the playoffs... Just my opinion
I would love for the CFP deal to be renegotiated. Then ESPN wouldn’t have as much leverage.
I agree. And why would any conference want another pig at the trough?16 or 32, no byes in the playoffs... Just my opinion
Tampa, there aren't 8 conference full of teams of the quality that will be desired. 32 to 48 teams at the max. What part of "blow up the existing conferences and create eight new" did you not understand? The SEC teams get scattered to the wind and split up between the eight new conferences. The Big10 get scattered to the wind and split up between the eight new conferences. Same for the ACC, the BIG, and all the rest.
I am all for giving everybody a chance without prejudgment of quality. Blend up all the conferences and create new regional conferences. If Alabama State can win enough to be one of the top two in a conference that contains current SEC titans Alabama, Auburn, Miss St, Ole Miss and LSU and gets into the conference championship game, who am I to tell them to sit home? If Georgia Southern or Kennesaw State can earn a top two spot in a conference with all the Florida schools, plus all the Georgia schools, plus all the South Carolina schools...I say have at it.Tampa, there aren't 8 conference full of teams of the quality that will be desired. 32 to 48 teams at the max.
I think the idea behind 24 teams is following in the footsteps of FCS which has had 24 teams for playoffs since 2013. This year they are now allowing 12 game regular season as well.16 or 32, no byes in the playoffs... Just my opinion
Very feasible in basketball, the one thing we have learned is how overmatched the G5 teams are in football against the "Top 15".I am all for giving everybody a chance without prejudgment of quality. Conferences aren’t getting blown up. I understand we all have our own dream scenarios but you have to life in reality. The reality is the playoffs will expand and the big battle will be over how many auto bids are given once it does. Since Clemson and FSU have already sued the ACC it’s pretty apparent they are going to leave and already have a landing spot. I also suspect several others also have landing spots. What part of "blow up the existing conferences and create eight new" did you not understand? I know. You are absolutely correct. I just hold onto my idealistic pipe dream.Conferences aren’t getting blown up.
So the only question is how many auto bids out of 24 the SEC and BIG wil be given. Since we don’t know how many teams/divisions/pods the 2 super conferences will settle on I’m expecting each of them to get 8 auto bids each so that’s 16 of 24 spots. Then you give the 3rd conference a handful and if a 4th still exists then a handful. Then you have a handful of others to hand out to the top G5 teams and/or independents.
Since this is what we already have thru negotiations then this is what we’ll have by adding more slots. Sure, it would be great to start over from scratch but that’s not a reality because teams would sue the minute you try and force them out of conferences.
This will happen initially but we'll eventually have automatic qualifiers once the big conferences realize they can break into divisions and then have play-in games at the end instead of championship games. So instead of having teams like UGA and LSU who have no need to play in or even win a conference championship to make the playoffs, you'd have teams like Vanderbilt and Ole Miss salivating to play a winner takes all play in game. This is what I've been waiting for my entire life - a real playoff system where teams aren't eliminated by mid September. The B1G has a new internal proposal to go from a 16-Team playoff in 2027 and 2028 to a 24-team playoff model in 2029. According to the ESPN article by Pete Thamel, they have changed their position from having automatic qualifiers to 23 at large power 4 teams plus one G-6 Team. There are no conference championship games in the 24-team model. See excerpts below plus the article with a lot of detail if interested.
The Big Ten is circulating an internal document that lays out what a 24-team College Football Playoff would look like, including the elimination of conference championship games, a 23+1 selection model and an additional weekend of on-campus CFP home games.
With the College Football Playoff format remaining at 12 for the 2026 season, the drumbeat of potential CFP change will inevitably echo through the coming season. The document, obtained by ESPN, includes other interesting details, such as the committee being tasked with not having any rematches in the first round.
The sides of the potential expansion issue were drawn clear in recent weeks. The SEC was willing to go to a 16-team format, and the Big Ten was willing to grow to 16 only with an agreement to eventually go to 24 teams. Those two leagues essentially control the CFP decision-making, hence the stalemate.
The Big Ten internal document details what the conference has termed a "24 team CFP Format Compromise." Sources told ESPN it has been distributed to the league's athletic directors and a working group of head coaches.
The 24-team format would consist of the 23 best teams and one spot for the Group of 6. There would be no automatic qualifiers, which had been a point of emphasis for the Big Ten in CFP discussions last year. If the field grows to 24, sources have indicated that automatic qualifiers would matter less to the Big Ten.

What probability do you assign that the SECheat would allow their teams to be “scattered to the wind and split up?”What part of "blow up the existing conferences and create eight new" did you not understand? Zero. I am Don Quixote tilting at windmills. It is my idealized solution to the problem that eliminates the need for weekly rankings and a selection committee. All teams in my idealized solution get into the playoff based solely on wins earned on the field of play. The fundamental premise is, "If you can't get into a Conference Championship game, you have no business playing for a National Title."What probability do you assign that the SECheat would allow their teams to be “scattered to the wind and split up?”
Preach, bro!Zero. I am Don Quixote tilting at windmills. It is my idealized solution to the problem that eliminates the need for weekly rankings and a selection committee. In the theoretical 24-game playoff mentioned above...based on historical ranking/selection patterns that are heavily influenced by ESPN and FOX, some years, we are gonna have 9 teams each from Big Ten and SEC; plus 2 each from ACC and Big12, Notre Dame and one G5. Multiple teams will have 3 or 4 (maybe even 5) losses but be highly "ranked" because of recruiting rankings, conference affiliation, and perceived strength of schedule. I want all of that kind of nonsense to be eliminated.
