Sigh, right again as usual.

Agree on Yates. On running plays, option, and passes when Yates has decent protection he got it done. When OL blocking broke down quickly he bolted and the run for your life offense was spotty. If OL protection improves Yates will be good. If not he needs to improve (and coaching should help) to get the ball out short and quick.

Yates would have been fun to watch in the 3O. Certainly seems to have a high football IQ

I was disappointed with the DL/DE play. No pass rush at all and the much hyped DE's were poor at setting the edge on some runs. We got real good play from the Will LBs. One one drive C Thomas made three straight tackes and Quez came in and made the next two. Swilling and Walker made some big plays. But the D once again let us down when the game was on the line. Late in the game the hurry up O got out D rattled and we had some busted coverages and gave up some yardage from not being ready for the snap. The after play celebrations and late and poor decisions on when to make mass substitutions added to our D woes. Coaching can fix this if there is a will to do it.

On O our scheme needs to do better to include plays where the pass protection quickly breaks down. Instead of run for your life mode we need to have plays to quickly dump off the ball to have a better chance to move the ball forward. When we had adequate pass protection our passing game looked more like P5 football. At this stage of our OL development we need to be a run team with passing to keep the D honest. A "balanced run/pass attack" should not be our game plan. Play calling should focus on getting that next first down. If Yates is playing we need to more utilize his talent in the Run/option plays with Donte and Griffin and Gribbs and the inside game more with a heavy dose of Mason. In other words maximize the use of our playmakers' skills.

I thought the OL was pretty good last night, granted it was against NIU. We moved the ball at will pretty much all evening, especially on the ground. Of course we only scored 21 points despite that for...reasons. Yates had time in the pocket and completed all his pitch and catches.

This thread actually has a topic—trying to identify under the radar players.

Charlie Thomas looked good. I hadn’t been looking for him until last night
