About 5 years ago I went to my grand daughters TRAVEL basketball game. She lives in Auburn and the game in College Park. The game was ALL about who had the best athletes and who out hustled, gave the hardest hits, and such. I told my son in law that was not real basketball. Now in the Ky. No. Car. game thats what that was! No plays it was street basketball. NO coaching. Just who could out fast, quick, hit, and make a few street type plays. Now I know how our team beat No Car. Sure these guys( Our guys) played travel ball and got into all that type of BB. But we have a GREAT COACH and STAFF who taught and COACHED! How to run plays, defense, hustle, and that my friends beat Roy and his band of athletes. Neither Ky or Nc ran any set plays. It was all street ball and with the athletic players they just ran wild. I noticed ole Roy never set anything up. And like travel ball refs. the refs in this game let em rip! That's my story and I believe it!!! Please comment!

I'll be rooting for Oregon against UNC;) There's no way i'm going to root for the Tarholes:vomit:
Mike the only thing is what if NC wins the national title. You know we beat them! Now how would that make us look on the national stage and in setting the season up for next year! Thanks for your comment!

Calipari has said for years, "I'd rather have the Jimmy's and the Joe's than the x's and the o's." That doesn't mean he and Roy can't draw up plays, but they are interested in recruiting great players, which ultimately wins games. That's why I'm confident if CJP can get some good recruits at Tech, we can really turn this thing around. With all due respect, I think Roy probably does more coaching than you realize. To quote our coach, "You have to have guys that can put the ball in the hole." There's a reason UNC and UK have made as many final fours as they have made...good coaches with good players.

After we beat em, Roy just blamed his players. Later, he said that maybe he didn't give our D enuf credit.

Maybe? If you can't see what's happening on the court live, you're not a great coach.

Roy is a decent coach with elite talent.

Thanks for the reply! Imho opinion the game was helter skelter!! They were just trying to run through each other just like those kids were doing in that travel game! For the most part there were no set plays.

If UNC wins it all and we win the NIT it makes the ACC look as strong as it was this season (before 11 teams dropped out of the tournaments early) and makes us look very strong for now and the future. Thinking more conference and us here.

I also noticed the lack of ref'ing going on in large sections of the game.

You can see why we beat North Carolina, and why several other teams did too. They have great 5* players at every position, but they have to make 50%-55%+ of their shots, because they don't play defense. Honestly, they rarely play defense. If they play a game where they're not shooting well, they're dead.

Roy is not known for being a good game coach. Was evident in ACC tournament loss against Duke late in second half. They were terribly disorganized at times. They get great players on reputation alone.

They also don't play defense. When they have games where they don't get calls or don't shoot the ball well, they are very vulnerable.

My Take: Two legendary coaches trying to improve THEIR legendary status ...
My question is ... When does the cycle change, when do the Coach K's, Roy Williams', Rick Patino's, Calipari's, etc etc stop getting their automatic 5* McDonald All-American rosters ?
... I will pull for UNC and stick with conference loyalty.

So long as nobody seriously investigates or cares about how teams like Alabama (football) and UNCheat (basketball) treat their kids and serve up fraudulent degrees, I don't see any measurable change.

You do have to give UNC credit for being the one team in the entire tournament that can win a game without making 3’s. The 37 or so Free Throws Duke had against UNC was clearly the only reason they won that ACCT game. The ACC got flipped on its head this tournament because the reffing is so much different than how our regular season goes. I don’t blame the tournament officiating, I blame the ACC officiating during the season.

Every ACC team got beat because the other team was way more physical on defense and on the boards. ACC refs during the season would never let even the slightest over the back or touch foul go uncalled but this entire tournament you see guys flying over top of other players for the rebound and playing very physical defense. It was an adjustment the ACC wasn’t ready for because we had to play sissy ball for months. The teams still left in the tournament are playing top notch defense. UNC has the worst defense left but they’ve played decent enough on D so far.

I'm with you. Sadly, there's not a lot of discipline in basketball anymore. That's one of the things I have really enjoyed about watching this Georgia Tech team. For the most part, they have been disciplined on both ends of the court.

I was in and out on this game and just watched (Most of) the second half. For the majority of the second half, UK looked like a more "disciplined" team (relatively speaking). They did run a set offense and on several occasions gave up a decent shot to get a better one. I thought they would win. UNC on the other was doing exactly what you said. Very little offensive continuity. A high screen most of the time with the shot clock under 10 and a forced (bad) shot. The UNC switch to zone seemed to be enough to get UK out of their rhythm. UNC made a few good defensive plays (or UK made bad turnovers, depending on your perspective) and 3 or 4 or 5 of the UNC "wild shots" started to fall. To your point, I would much rather watch GT style of play. Although the "athletic feats" aren't as frequent, I appreciate that type of basketball. Then again, that is how i learned the game. I guess if you learned it another way you might have a different perspective.
