hear me out: we already play all the in state teams during the year. Why not just make an “in season state champion”. Just make the midweek games a round robin game, and then keep standings throughout the year. The scheduling is pretty much baked in, and it could create the simulated feel of meaningful games late in season to get ready for the tournament.
Nothing is stopping fans from already doing this, but maybe the teams could announce something “official” and set aside a Tuesday later in the season where the “championship” game would be played at Truist, and the other teams could play each other depending on seeding. You wouldn’t necessarily know where you would play that game, but keeping it with in state teams means you would never be traveling too far
