So this guy had been sent to mental hospitals multiple times. I don’t profess to be an expert on Marylands gun laws (where he lived) or federal ones, but I’m pretty sure that’s supposed to negate your ability to legally buy guns. The same theme continues to drone on - we are incapable of enforcing our laws.

By Maryland law he would have had to disclose if he was involuntarily committed to a mental institution. Since this happened when he was younger, his parents consent would have made this non applicable. He also would have had to consent to a review by a state health agency in which they could report whether he has a mental disorder, a history of violent behavior, or if he had been hospitalized for more than 30 days. None of which applied. His purchasing of weapons was completely legal. Gun control laws in this country are complete garbage and will likely never get better.

The gun control laws we have now are mostly fine. Mostly? They just need to be enforced. It sounds like this one needs to be cleaned up – if the point is that people who have been committed to a mental illness institution shouldn’t have been able to buy guns, then he shouldn’t of been able to buy guns. That should all be reported into the background check system – you should never have to depend on a person filling out an application to say if they are insane or have been convicted of a felony etc etc. Ridiculous. It seems like every single one of these mass shootings involves a person who shouldn’t have been able to have a gun.

This one was entirely legal ownership as the law stands. According to Statisa, 72 mass shootings had the weaspons obtained legally, 15 illegally, and 12 were undetermined. That's over 70% failure rate of existing laws

It’s a failure to ENFORCE existing laws. As I’ve listed before, you can go down shooting after shooting after shooting, and it feels like 90%+ of them the person should’ve never been able to legally buy guns.

If there’s a loophole where a mentally ill person shouldn’t be able to buy a gun, but the gun shop is required to take the person at their word on the application, then they can fix that. But the underlying law as it’s intended should do it’s job.

Laws can’t prevent crimes they make clear what is illegal and provide guidelines for punishments for violating them. Can they act as a deterrent? For some yes, if the penalty is severe enough. For others no. Some members of society are willing to commit evil upon others despite any legal repercussions. The only way to stop them in the act is with force.

The pos in this shooting was willing to take his own life so no law would deter him. Good luck drafting a law that would prevent all gun purchases of the “mentally unstable” without violating 2A.

Will be interesting to see what mental issues this guy had though. Will also be interesting to discover how many hours he may have played first person shooter video games that may have de-sensitized him with regard to shooting others.

Parkland High school - The police were called to his house 30 times, he was on a campus no-fly list, brought weapons to school etc etc but none of that was put into the background system.

Charleston Church - shooter had an arrest record that should have denied him a weapon but it wasn’t entered into the system.

Orlando nightclub - he was on a terrorist watch list and had been under surveillance, but none of that was in the background check system.

Garland Texas - The shooters were under FBI surveillance, and in fact the FBI agent followed them to the site of the shooting, witnessed the shooting, did nothing to try and stop it, and then tried to flee the scene.

Virginia Tech - diagnosed with severe mental illness etc etc

San Bernardino - one of the shooters posted often on social media about juhad and wanting to kill Americans, but during their immigration applications, no background check was done.

Fort Hood - he was surveilled by NSA and on a terrorist watch list, but nothing was done or put into the background check system.

Chattanooga - killers family was on a terrorist watch list for giving money to terrorist organizations, but nothing was placed in the background check system and nobody did anything.

Navy Yard - shooter was cited on at least eight occasions for misconduct!!! He was arrested multiple (!!!) times on gun and violence charges. None of this was put into the background check system.

I could literally go on all day. Sad.
