And honestly, even if they are the ones "paying them", they shld f*ck off.

Not sure why people defend the concept of accepting boorish behavior 'because I paid my monay".

All you pay(sic) for is the effort. If you don't like the effort, stop paying. Then be mad at yourself for throwing good money after bad.
No one is defending anything. Boorish behavior by irrational fans is going to happen. It's part of our culture. It gets worse when the players are getting paid. Players need to stop whining about it and figure out how to toughen up or isolate themselves from it if it's too much. Every change has unintended consequences, and a heightened expectation for performance from these highly paid players is part of that, warranted or not. Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. The same caveats apply.

As for the bolded part, good luck with that.

It happens because the sane among us say things like, "Boorish behavior by irrational fans is going to happen."

That's my point.

Why are we ok with it? We shouldn't be. Don't tacitly forgive it by suggesting the players should "toughen up" or stte.

I'm neither condoning nor accepting nor tacitly forgiving anything. It's been around forever and it's not going away. It happens because irrational fans are going to act irrationally. There's just a little more direct access to players off the court now with social media. Part of being a professional, and getting paid big bucks makes you a professional, is dealing with everything that comes with it. When you get paid, you're judged by your performance, not your effort. When you're a public figure, you get judged publicly for your performance (or lack thereof). I think we understand each other, Same caveats apply.

To be clear, I hear what you're saying. I just don't agree with the notion that some people are bad so we should just let them be so.

People that are jerks should feel pressure from the rest of us to fix themselves. The rest of us should feel compelled to just 'deal with them'.

They need to change, not us.

Secondly, as I said, we pay sports entertainers for the effort not the results. We can only hope for the results we want. The idea that "because they're public figures" they should just deal with 'stuff' is asinine and only exists because people allow idiots to be idiots with impunity.

Eta. Just adding that we'll not convince each other to change out minds so I'm not arguing, just sharing my thoughts. I've started to repeat myself so I'll bow out on this one.

Is being a jerk the same as being a crazy person? You don't realize it? . Asking for a friend, actually, more like an online acquaintance.

We're not on opposite sides of this discussion. I agree with you. You'll never find a post (in the almost 10,000 posts in 12 years) where I have criticized one of our student-athletes for their performance. You'll find many where I have defended them or went after a font that did go after one of our players. So, we agree as to what proper behavior is.

My point is only that we can't control these people, regardless of peer pressure or whatever. There are too many of them and they don't care. If these players want to be in this environment, they need to understand all of what that brings. Irrational fans don't care about effort, they care about results. Life is full of idiots that we, as working adults, have to deal with every day and it's not because we "allow" idiots to be idiots with impunity.

Yeah I guess I'll have to begrudgingly agree.

But know that I'll continue to pressure @Peacone36 , @Northeast Stinger , and all the other ne'er-do-wells among us to be better.

It's a heavy burden, but I'm up to the task.

Maybe I missed it that someone else mentioned this earlier: but the worst possible reaction to this kind of harassment is to validate it by publicly acting hurt. That only reinforces the bad behavior since the very point of it is to make the target suffer. If they want it to stop, the worse thing they could do is cry about it.
