Is there a stat on "three and outs"? I wouldn't be surprised. What is considered "excessive"? I know there were times when I thought the punter was going to have his leg fall off.

No official stats that I was able to find...manually going thru game casts from last year there were 50+ three and outs.

Four or so a game? Seems like when Bill Lewis was coach the offense left the defense hanging with a lot of three and outs. Today, it is even worse with offenses going up and down the field.

If you define "3 and out" as any possession where we either:
1. Punted on the 4th down,
2. Turned the ball over in the first three downs, or
3. Turned the ball over on downs on 4th down,

then we had 62 last season, or 5.2 a game. We were especially bad against VT (10) and uga (11). If you expanded the metric to 4 or 5 downs and out the number would jump sizably. This shouldn't be surprising to anyone who watched our offense last year. With better OL play and more experience at the QB position, we should hopefully make good improvement this year.
