Ok Pastner. This is your shot to make the NCAA tournament! Deep, veteran back court with a prolific scorer coming in (hopefully) a couple athletic wings and an all ACC (defensive) low post presence, along with decent depth. No reason not to be a play in team st the worst! If not l, bye!

He won't be fired if he doesn't make the Tourney next year. He will likely be fired if he doesn't make the Tourney after year 5.

Isn’t that same backcourt going to be together for 2 more years? Banks will be gone, but 2 years from now won’t we still be even better?

Understand that firing coaches has at least as much to do with the contract you have with them as it does on performance both on and off the court.
Look no farther than Wake and BC who both just retained coaches after 5 years with significantly worse records than Pastner's.

Pastner made $1.8MM this past season and will make $1.9MM this upcoming season.
The only coach that will be making less than Pastner in the ACC this year is Jim Christian at BC. Mike Young at VT will make $2MM.

The contract is fully guaranteed if he is fired through year 4. Starting in year 5 that reduces to 75% of remaining balance.
Also, TStan added a $500K retention bonus if he is still the coach after year 5. The current contract is a 7 year deal.

Everything about how the contract is set up is designed to make a decision after year 5.
With TStan emptying the bank account for the new football staff and also hiring a new WBB coach, he is going to need those 2 years to replenish the funds if he ultimately decides he wants to make a move. After year 5 is the obvious time to make a extension or cut decision.

Glad to see Banks stay and hope he can finish a degree. He has a lot of time already invested in his education to not finish now. He has some things to work on for the NBA and he will be a major part of the team next year. We still need another big to back him up.
