If only 1/2 dozen people knew and one of them was ESPN (SEC) it would not surprise me at all if the first leak in the history of CFP was an attempt to create a firestorm about leaving Alabama out.

Right.

Even if Alabama isn't in the playoffs, we can still make them the center of attention. More clicks, more views, more $$$.

But then after the "firestorm", when they realize it was the Athletic Director of Arkasas who alerted the SEC that they only had three teams in the playoffs, they will decide that it wasn't that big of a deal and take no action. If it were anyone else, or any other conference there would be consequences.

“After much thought, we realized this could be prevented by guaranteeing the SEC five spots”

There’s also a decent chance McMurphy hedged his bet and took a shot in the dark to get it right. The odds in Vegas shifted to SMU being in after several tv talking heads including McElroy got a lot of publicity for saying SMU should be in over Bama. ESPN would have an invested interest in SMU getting in too because SMU being dropped would have likely been the death of conference title games. Continued conference title game revenue > 1 bama playoff year for money so even if you’re going on the money logic it made sense to put SMU in too

One of the ESPN talking heads made a joke that the guy in ESPN's graphics department knew more than anyone since he actually has to create the graphics before the selection show.

There's more points of leakage than people think. I'm sure the guy in the graphics department isn't the only one in the chain of information outside of the people in the committee.

The first time ever for a college football playoff selection leak. The first time ever for a 12 team playoff. Someone either couldn’t contain themselves because they have the maturity of a 13 year old, or this was a deliberate attempt at lobbying for SEC teams.
