How Much Time Does Is Reasonable To Evaluate CDS?

Given all of that I want to be clear I am NOT calling for any changes at this stage (not that my opinion matters much anyway).

But I am curious amongst our more knowledgeable fans as to how much time is fair to evaluate CDS and his program? If this year turns into a lost year (as certainly seems likely or at least possible at this point) does he get one more year before we can judge him? Thoughts?

He was being snarky about CDS' comment last season.

Just made a post in the OU thread about this but I think he gets through next year before Batt needs to make his move (whether that is an extension or relieving of duties). For the record here, I liked the CDS hire and still do though I'm disappointed in how his tenure has gone. He has been incredibly successful in pulling big money into the program, which is evident through our uptick in recruiting success (even the "Hat Shows" we're apart of are very impressive - you do not see ACC peer institutions side-by-side with the Kansas's and Kentucky's). Unfortunately, while the most elite athletes money can buy can singlehandedly win you some basketball games, it does not paint the full picture and there are many other variables in play that determine whether you win or lose a game. I suspect we are probably doing less with more than 90% of power conference programs.

The sad reality I hate to admit is that Georgia Tech basketball is not a highly desirable job in 2024. The candidate considering the role has more tailwinds right now than we've had in a long time thanks to Batt and Cabrera, but you can still expect a bottom-of-the-barrel power conference salary, an academic environment that is going to filter down your list of potential recruits, average facilities, and a lack of fan support (some coaches would say this is a good thing since this job has little pressure but those are probably not the coaches you want anyway). This place can easily tank your coaching career, which is why we've been stuck hiring retreads or taking chances of unproven coaches.

Still rooting for CDS but his recruiting pitches and fundraising pitches are going to start losing wheels at some point if things don't turn around. The fact that Coach Key, hired roughly the same time, is running absolute laps around him is not helping.

Arguably, we aren’t playing defense the way he wants us to.

Stoudamire came in, and we had a lot of holes on the roster. He found an undervalued player in Nait, and pulled in some solid guys. we were missing a couple of players to play the 5, and that burned us last year. This year, we have a young player stepping into that role, and he hasn’t “fully baked” yet. We finally played well in the paint last night, and ran into foul trouble.

Combine that with a sophomore slump, a few injured players, and we’re off to a bad start this year. It sucks.

i think we need more depth in the middle and more maturity.

I would want l significant progress by end of next year.

I think when roster-building through transfers there is significantly higher variance than through bringing in and developing freshmen. So I’m grading the transfers performances on a curve.

I’m very curious to see if this years team gels through the year like last year’s. If so then there could be some major work needed on early prep - or just need a lot more retention as the coaching change turnover slows.

At least. And with additional headwinds of anything goes NIL/transfer portal it is a difficult to impossible job that he was recruited for. He didn’t apply for this spot His guys are George, Ndongo, Soaure, the only voluntary frosh holdovers; Mustaph, DO & Sutton. The rest are best we can get temporary plugs out of the portal in an attempt to make the team competitive during rebuilding. McCollum & O’Brien for 1 year, Reeves for 2 & maybe Powell for 2. At least 1 more recruiting class or 2, without losing what is already here, before any fair judgment.

CDS didn’t come from another school to bring players & recruits with him like
Michigan, Louisville, Arkansas, or St John’s got. He didn’t come to a powerhouse program that ranked kids want to come to. And the guys who already want him fired, what do you do next. Start a new rebuild? With who? With what? You gonna get Bruce Pearl & have his entire team transfer?

When posters demean the guy from day of his hire and/or trash, ridicule or criticize his coaching after every loss, tough to suddenly take you seriously with any credibility in saying you don’t want a change or are calling for fairness.

I don’t spend much time on the football threads, but some of those guys are even more vicious, outrageous & delusional than you find here, bashing HC, staff, QB, kicker after they ****kicked UGA, only to lose in 8 OTs, playing an entire 2nd half without 5 of their best defensive backs. The worst thing about GT sports might just be many of their so-called fans

I was satisfied with the results last year but thought his coaching was still in question. This year speaks for itself. I don't think it matters what we think. Ticket sales and attendance and big donor contributions and judgements are obviously more important. I hope CDS can turn it around. The ACC looks very weak this year.

I think he surely gets through next season. Its frustrating, because we started slow last year (understandable) and then became a good team but the early losses kept us from NIT. This year looks similar but maybe moreso due to injuries (McCollum and Sutton out last night) and Mustaf's family circumstances. Powell looked good last night and Mustaf is coming on, but I kind of feel like these early losses might again keep us out of a tourney (even tho uga, NFla Cinci and OU losses aren't "bad" losses, maybe bad scheduling). We will have to have a record several games over .500 in ACC to make a tourney.

Fans tend to evaluate a coach possession to possession.

The real question is how much time is he gonna get. Unless he loses the team or there is some kind of scandal, most coaches get ~5 years to prove that they can't get things done. Don't know about Jbatt though.

I don't think it takes that long to turn around a basketball team, but the program has been down for a long time so he needs some leeway. If he can't win with "his guys" in year 3, he's probably not going to win.

3-4 years - depends upon the trendline.

This year is off to a poor start.
No one is playing particularly well, especially defensively.
No big Soph jumps from Nait and Ndongo so far.

He needs minimum of 3 full years and better if allowed 4. He needs to establish connections and possibly upgrade his staff if they aren't getting it done. It's tough to bring a new group together every year and get them playing together as a team. Best to judge improvement in January. So much churn now with the portal, it's tough.

It's not likely to matter because if Damon believes he can't turn this around & start winning, he'll likely leave on his own and head back to the NBA as an assistant.

So we've got this year and probably next year.

We'll either have things on track (meaning path to consistent winning) at that point or he's very likely to self select out.

Mix of feelings/hunch , conversations had, and perception of CDS and his desire to win.

Unlike most college coaches, milking a school for that buyout money is a non-factor.

Seems like he'll want to get back on an upward professional path, rather than stick around.
