Whiling-away the off season topic #2: How many players on this season's roster will average in double figures in points scored?

If we have a dominant scorer this year, it will be unexpected. So, if we are going to be a decent scoring team it might well be via balanced scoring.

Which players on the roster end up averaging over ten points per game? How may do we need to average in double digits to have at least a .500 record?

I think wee will need a minimum of 4 players averaging double figures to be decent.

Franklin, Howard, Deebo, Kelly, Terry, Maxwell, Smith, Sturdivant are the most likely candidates. Jalon Moore and Jermontae Hill might be darkhorse candidates.

Kelly is most likely, with Deebo sort of expected to be. Terry might be able to continue his double digitry. Sturdivant may come near and if Howard scores like he ended last season he may have a shot. Anyone else would be a real pleasant surprise.

Here are the 20-21 “per 40 minutes” numbers. It’s silly to just extrapolate on some of the numbers, but it gives a starting point.

To repeat, this is a silly analysis, but you gotta start somewhere.

Maxwell, Jalon Moore, Miles Kelley, Kyle Sturdivant, Smith, Coleman, and Howard are all potential double-digit scorers. Maxwell and Moore didn’t get many minutes, so there’s a lot of “hope” in that possibility. Howard and Coleman are skin-of-the-teeth possibilities based on last season.

I expect at least three players to average in double digits, four if we’re having a decent season, five if we’re having a great season. We haven’t seen five players in double-digits in a while, but that’s normal for Duke/UNC/Gonzaga/etc.

We have a lot of players with a shot at averaging in double digits—at least 7–but it needs us to unclog our offense.

Coleman and Howard would need to really improve their game to average in double digits—either our scheme needs to help them out, or they have to grow into their roles a LOT.

I’m leaving off Terry, who averaged in double digits before transferring. I'm leaving off Hill, who has no stats.

I expect us to have four in double digits. I wouldn't be surprised if Terry was one of them.

two or three double digit scorers. That's the case for most P5 teams. I just did a quick scan of last year's top 25 and most had three or four kids average 10+ Gonzaga, Duke & Kentucky all had 5. UNC, Nova, UCLA, Auburn, Purdue & Arkansas had 4. Baylor, Tennessee, Arizona, Wisconsin & Providence 3

I think we'll have two or three average 10+ and another two or three in the 7.5 - 9.5 range. Pastner's teams have averaged mid to high 60s every year except 2020-21, so I would expect that to be the case again. 3 guys averaging 35 combined, with 3 off the bench for another 24 leave a couple of ppl for the other subs. Sounds about right

How may do we need to average in double digits to have at least a .500 record?

With a roster of Sturdivant, Smith, Maxwell, Terry, Kelly, Coleman, More, Franklin, Meka, and Howard we have 10 players who could probably contribute solid production and no proven standouts so we may see less pooling of minutes into one player or the scoring into two or three positions. It could also be that we go more up tempo, especially with Martynov being added to give us a bit more emergency size depth, which would lead to more scoring. Or it's possible that in the absence of Devoe and Usher, Coleman and Kelly both step up and average ~17 a game and we surround them with a couple guys who average about 7-9 a game each.

I think we could have a good season with as few as 2 double digit scorers. I think 3 or 4 is more likely and 5 would be a surprise unless Smith really make a big jump and we push the tempo hard to take advantage of his athleticism.
