Always knew they were down there but it's interesting to actually see them. I think Tech should explore the possibility of renovating that area as a storm shelter. It will never be a shelter from tornados but could be shelter from lighting. As it is now they kick fans out of the stadium...which might limit civil liability but does little to protect fans.

Remember having to look around those steel girders, depending which end of the field the play was on. :)
Are you talking about the east stands or the west? I remember two big sight line problems in the old east: 1) the over hanging upper deck (which was a blessing if it rained) blocked your view of the upper arc of kickoffs and punts and 2) the steel columns that supported the upper deck blocked just about everything if you happened to be unlucky enough to be sitting behind one.

I was under there several years back when my company insured the stadium and it was pretty cool. That area used to be used for a lot more storage than it is now (desks, furniture, etc.). If I remember correctly, in the early 2000's, a homeless person was underneath and started a fire to try and keep warm (others said it was an electrical fire), but got trapped with the fire between him and the exit and had to be rescued by the fire department.
