Where so many games which could go either way very late always end in a loss? Could it swing back in our favor next year, or at least even up some?
It would be the gambler's fallacy to believe that it would even up next year, but it's not an unreasonable expectation. What's so frustrating is that with even a mediocre Johnson offense, we'd have probably won 8 games, maybe 7, by now.
Yeah, I don't recall anyone saying otherwise. This offense is way below the Mendoza line this year.
I wouldn't argue with that. Just mediocre. But Thursday night we got 161 yards rushing. Total. Four quarters. What we normally get (until this season) in a half. I know there are a lot of reasons and I'm not an X and O guy, but good lord, has anybody ever seen so many unblocked football players after the play starts? They seemingly come from everywhere, and it does not take a demonic scheme to get into the backfield, just quickness and aggressiveness. I'll let others figure it out. My only contribution is that Thomas is taking a drop much too deep for his linemen to hold the pocket. Maybe it is self preservation, but too often DEs and LBs don't have to muscle through: just sprint at the right angle and Thomas is wide open because the DT can't fall back that fast. Or even know where he is. And as loathe as I am to admit getting there, I don't even care about Miami. I hope we practice for two weeks to play Georgia. It is the only thing left worth playing for. We did our bit for Crimestoppers by beating FSU. Add Georgia as a bonus. It would be the gambler's fallacy to believe that it would even up next year, but it's not an unreasonable expectation. I'm right there with you. It's strange - and more liberating than I want it to be - to have no real interest either way in next week's game. Watch them go out the next week and beat the hell out of UGA, just to torment us with what might have been.I wouldn't argue with that. Just mediocre. But Thursday night we got 161 yards rushing. If I were searching for the right word, "liberating" nails it. Just get on to Georgia so I can gig my friends down in South Georgia who insist on referring to that joint as "The University". Too often I have had to either bite my tongue or suggest it can't be much of a "university" if they got in. That's just not satisfying though.I'm right there with you. Yesssss. We got beat at ND. We got badly beat at Clemson. This, as a quick look at their results this year will show, is nothing out of the ordinary. We've also had 5 games where we lost by an average of 6.4 points (Take out Puke and it's 4.5.) It isn't as if we're getting blown out or anything. It's that we have 5 one possession losses this year. We had three last year: Puke, UNC, and FSU in the championship. This is part of the difference between a 3 win and an 11 win season. And I think everyone here has a clear notion of why this year is so painful. It reminds me a little of last years basketball season when we somehow went 0-11 in ACC games decided by 5 points or less or in overtime.
Not to put to fine a point on it, or place blame, but we won games last year -- GSU, VT, Georgia -- because Thomas made a play. This year for perhaps lots of reasons, he made none of those plays. Maybe it points to it's what's up front that counts.Yesssss. We got beat at ND. We got badly beat at Clemson. And, yes, I can remember years where we did this badly in terms of wins. What is so grating is that in those days it was because we didn't have the horses. Now we've got them in spades, but they are all sitting on the bench. I can't recall any year like that in all my time watching Tech football. The up side is that they'll all be back next year with another year of work behind them. The down side is that we sure could have used them getting game experience this year. But that's a problem that cures itself over time.
I'm just as curious to know why we were favored. So I'm interested to know, however, when the last time a team lost six games in a row in which it was favored.
Well Said.... We have heard talk in the past about Pistol formations, Hurry Up tweaks, but the bottom line is when a Defense plays sound TO defense CPJ has no answer..Probably the most troubling, or damning aspect to GT's CFB record over the last 5 years (with 2014 being a HUGE exception) is that we have found ways to lose close competitive contests far more than we have "pulled them out of the fire", so to speak. I am of the mindset that if you are talented enough to be leading in Q4 ( or essentially tied), then you are talented enough to win. Well, we have ended up on the short end in these circumstances far too much for my liking. The weakest area in CPJ's resume, if you ask me, is not: recruiting, the overall record, the struggles on defense, the relationship with the press, the unbalanced nature of the offense, nor the current losing stretch, but rather, the inability to develop a culture of winning in contests that are winnable, this being over the long haul. Every team has games that they just get beat, sometimes handily, by simply better opponents that day. It happens. GT, I feel sure, has an abysmal record in competitive (close) contests over the last half decade.
So, if you ask me, have you ever seen a season like this? Well, maybe not to this degree, but yes.
Thanks, but I am not sure how this statement relates to what I wrote.Well Said.... We have heard talk in the past about Pistol formations, Hurry Up tweaks, but the bottom line is when a Defense plays sound TO defense CPJ has no answer..
