If /when Philo is our QB, Buster will have a totally different offense. He maximizes what he has. Run game with King, OPen game with Philo. I amd excited for thsis young man. Build an O around him (with some decent run game) and we have a winner. Contrary to others, I thought the OL did a great job pass blocking. The run jst wsn't their. They crowded th LOS and dared us to throw. And Pyron couldn't. But Philo can Wow. NIL. Keep this kid.
I agree the OL did pass block very well today. It was clear we were going to pass and they held up very well!

LOL - pay attention - before today!

VT - # 32 of 138 in scoring offense at 32.1 ppg // GT - #55 in scoring offense at 30.4 ppg
VT - #65 in total offense at 398 yards / game // GT - #39 in total offense at 431 yards/game

We gain 31 more yards per game but VT scores 2 more points per game.

We are offensive peers!
To reinforce your point and to counter @Dottie1145's some more, FEI ranked VT's offense #39 going into the game. That's decent and significantly above average in FBS. Their ranking will probably drop some due to the performance of our defense today. How anyone could have watched the game and then want to undermine our defensive performance is puzzling. I lost count of the number of 3-and-outs we held them to.
Plenty of other areas to critique about this game, but our defense did their best to keep us in it.

I could only see a bit of the game - if I had seen none of it, only informed by game stats:
GT 355 yards offense to vpi 237 yards
GT 2 interceptions
GT lousy 3rd/4th down efficiency
GT 2 FGs, no TDs
GT had edge with time of possession

Bottom line, looks like we lost because of INTs and inability to sustain drives and score TDs after crossing mid field. But we statistically moved the ball well - don’t typically lose by 2 TDs after out gaining the other team like that.
There is an issue with just seeing the statistics. VT was never really in doubt of winning the game once they got their 2nd TD. They were very confident GT's offense couldn't score a TD. They were correct and VT played an ultra conservative offensive game. Our defense played a solid game. VT gained close to 100 yards in field position due to the punt game. Gee shocking we suck with both punt teams. WE gained a lot of yardage late in the game, good play by us and VT was not going to let us get a long TD play. VT was clearly the better team on the field today!

I want them to be better than me. I want them to come up with something better than just, “well, **** it. Run Jamal where everyone expects us to run him.”

Do we literally have no backup players that get reps in our offense? Are we so fragile that if these guys go down we are a 3-9 team? Our staff doesn’t have any idea what the reserves do well? It’s just frustrating to think that’s the case.
That 4th and 1 when they decided to just run Jamal straight up the middle was so unimaginative and predictable

To me it appears Pyron does not fit the offense Buster wants to run which is more RPO. GT will always need a quick/elusive QB who can burn you with the run so the defense - (Jones, Hamilton, Ball, Nesbit,Thomas, King). These guys could take a busted play and turn it into gold.

I think you are an optimist
Miami is much improved from last year and is a top ten team for sure.. UGA is a top 5 or so football factory so its not really a stretch to think both of them are capable of that kind of a game.
I agree. Other than getting beat badly by Tennessee and Clemson they look like a difficult opponent for GT.
True they got beat badly by Tennessee and UGA but there is no shame in that. I see NC State as pretty much on the same level as the two Techs. Not terrible but just mediocre typical ACC teams.

Perhaps they do. But last week we gave up 24 to ND. This week 21 to VT> For 15+ years we have begged for a defense that could get 2-3 stops a game. Or defend the run. Or hold our opponents under 30 points. Are we great? No. But we are at least an average D now and the trend line is positive on this side of the ball. Something that has been too long coming imo.
An average defense? Maybe but that assessment might get shredded when we play Miami.

#13 looked good at WR #12 looked good at QB... Need upgrades in the RB department and TE. Really hoping we can keep this recruiting class and get a few Transfers and the future is bright...

I am tired of losing though... Getting old
The future will not get brighter until the defense is much better. It may have improved though I am skeptical, but for this team to become a respected 8,9. or 10 game winner it all starts with both lines especially the defensive line. Shuffling skill position players around will not get it done.

Hopefully King returns and all is well. But if not, redshirting is likely a thing of the past. Everyone is a free agent - no sense playing the long game.
If they are indeed a "free agent" then about a quarter of this team should test the waters of free agency with the coaching staff giving them a "highly recommended" boot out the door.

We certainly look more like a 5-7 team than a bowl team at the moment. The only saving grace is that the ACC is full of mediocre to poor teams just like this one. Miami and UGA will beat this team by four or five touchdowns.
I’m not so sure about Miami. VT basically beat them. There’s no reason we couldn’t do the same if King is healthy.

But with our backups we are just plain BAD on offense.
