Simply we lack talented player depth. Nothing new for GT. Our #1 RB is clearly playing hurt. #s2-4 are all out. That leaves a true freshman who is the #5 RB as the other RB. You expect excellence from that! Nuts!

Couple that with backup QBs and presto our offense sucks!

I mean I hear that argument a lot, but then someone ALWAYS steps in for us a year later and we seem to scheme to their strengths. It seems like we don’t know what the backups do well right now.

I want them to be better than me. I want them to come up with something better than just, “well, **** it. Run Jamal where everyone expects us to run him.”

Do we literally have no backup players that get reps in our offense? Are we so fragile that if these guys go down we are a 3-9 team? Our staff doesn’t have any idea what the reserves do well? It’s just frustrating to think that’s the case.

I would not have complained about our high school offense if I had known it would be replaced with a middle school offense

I guess 102 teams have a worse offense that play FBS football. Do they play pee wee football! Have a cold beer and take a deep breath. Currently we do not have the offensive players healthy enough to do much. King and Haynes need to get truly healthy or we are in huge trouble going forward. Heck having a #2-4 backup RB would help. Pyron looks dinged up to me.

I hate to do this, but if CPJ had these players with on O with a D performance like that we win by 2-3 scores.

That’s not an elite defense. It’s good, but nowhere near elite. We made them look like the 85 Bears. They didn’t do anything all that special. No crazy pressure. No disguised coverage. Just basic cover 2/3/4 that we couldn’t execute against. When Philo came in it looked like we had no confidence in his ability to throw.

We played without our best offensive and best defensive players, but our staff gave us basically zero chance with our offensive game plan. We went from playing in a phone booth to playing in a hallway. By the time we figured that out and put Philo in it was too late.

This is obvious. No one has to prepare for us. We run the generic offense of today and run the same plays everyone else runs. Zero imagination and no one even has to watch our film anymore. Sure, every once in a while our QB will run a draw for success but that’s all we have. Johnson would have scored 30plus points today even if he didn’t run the triple because good coaches love to create plays. Our team motto today is “Offense for Dummies”. And did anyone else notice Jamaal going to the sideline with body language that said “I’m out”.

Please stop with the offense excuses. Paul Johnson and his “high school offense” would have put up 30+ on that defense. We played very poorly on offense today no matter where you set the bar. Just call it like it is and say we played like **** on that side of the ball - I’d be willing to bet the team will have that assessment.

Disappointing. Philo needs to play before Pyron. Pyron should be emergency QB. Defensive effort was good for most of game, but we needed a shutout to win this game, and we let them trick us. Too many backups playing on both sides of the ball to get any consistent level of performance. Really poor game plan and overall strategy. This was a winnable game that we let slip away. A lot like the Syracuse and Louisville games.

At this point you have to admit we are getting out schemed and out coached by teams of similar talent. I love Brent Key, but he is doing a poor job with this team. Our punting is not even High School level good. We might get lucky and win one more, but this season is a disappointment, and I am not getting any younger.

I would start to build for next year at this point. Play Philo and the other promising freshmen and get them some experience. This is going to go down as a mediocre at best season regardless at this point.

Pyron's a capable back up, the guy if you'd play him under center would be money in short yardage situations. I thought there was a clear reason why Philo was 3rd, not so clear anymore.

Key needs some talented staff. Neither himself nor his top assistants seem to be able to adapt on the fly or be able to make what many of us believe to be straightforward in game decisions like timeout management, clok management at end of halves/games, etc.

I get what you're saying about mediocre. Started with what was believed to be a memorable trip to Dublin and a signature win. It was a great time, the flight back was satisfying with all the FSU fans but weeks later we all found out we struggled to beat a patsy. We have 2 potential huge upsets left, a game we should win at home to get to a bowl bid to play a 1AA team or a fellow 6-6'er before Christmas. Hardly the lauching pad season we hoped for after game 1.

Good points. Not sure about getting a bowl bid unless King, Haynes and one more RB get fully healthy! Hard to rest guys as they are competitors and will play hurt unless the staff won't let them. I am always curious why anyone ever mentions Blackburn - until he actually contributes he is a non factor - not his fault he has had numerous serious injuries.

We certainly look more like a 5-7 team than a bowl team at the moment. The only saving grace is that the ACC is full of mediocre to poor teams just like this one. Miami and UGA will beat this team by four or five touchdowns.

Truth is we’re a pretty good football team when we have all our starters playing. Let the Tide QB and their best defensive player not play and they’ll lose games they’re suppose to win. It’s hard to win when you’re beat up. Get our QB back and I’m telling you we’re a good football team. Heck the tide is losing games they’re suppose to win with their starting QB. We gotta get King back is the bottom line.

No, Chicken Little, the sky is not falling.

At 5-4, we are EXACTLY where all the savants predicted we would be. Are we looking sharp, like a well-oiled machine? Of course not. That's why we are 5-4 and right where we were expected to be at this point in the season.

Going forward, we can expect a loss against Miami followed by a big win at home against NC State (to get bowl eligible) followed by another loss in Athens to end the regular season at 6-6. The outcome of the Lackluster Middling Bowl depends on who our opponent is, of course.

NEXT year, we need to stay on our upward trajectory by winning at least 7 games. After that, I'd really like to see us winning eight games as a floor consistently. That will depend on recruiting and who's calling the plays on both sides of the ball two years from now.

But for now, while recognizing that 5-7 is still possible, 6-6 is what I have been expecting for this season. That appears to be the likely outcome, IMO.

I have yet to meet a football fan that projects their team will royally suck (or suck worse) out several years from now. Wait till next year (and the next and the next…)

Indiana and Pitt also had team total over/unders at 5.5 wins. However, I suspect their fans would be upset if they **** the bed now, losing out the rest of the season even though they covered their win totals.

Today’s offensive performance was Collinsesque. And against a bad defense. That’s not progress.

Hopefully we won't need Philo to play meaningful minutes in the next 2 games. But if he does play in both those games, no way should he play in our last game. Philo fairly won the backup QB job today on the field of play in my book.
I'm still a Pyron fan though.

understand now in college football you don't need to redshirt a player that can help you.

I could only see a bit of the game - if I had seen none of it, only informed by game stats:
GT 355 yards offense to vpi 237 yards
GT 2 interceptions
GT lousy 3rd/4th down efficiency
GT 2 FGs, no TDs
GT had edge with time of possession

Bottom line, looks like we lost because of INTs and inability to sustain drives and score TDs after crossing mid field. But we statistically moved the ball well - don’t typically lose by 2 TDs after out gaining the other team like that.

You are remembering the CJP teams that excelled. Many of his teams struggled to get 20 points against poor Duke teams. If CJP was playing with a backup QB and had an unhealthy B Back and his 4 top A Backs hurt he would have struggled greatly.

Way past time to let go of a bygone era of college football. How did Navy fare against ND today? CJP's Option football was great until rule changes made in very average. Couple that with defenses that were terrible post 2010 and well there are lots of great memories of days gone by. Same with Ralph's offense. It was great in it's day, great memories.

Very good players are needed. We are without our best and many other offensive skill players are hurt, it's noticeable.

If /when Philo is our QB, Buster will have a totally different offense. He maximizes what he has. Run game with King, OPen game with Philo. I amd excited for thsis young man. Build an O around him (with some decent run game) and we have a winner. Contrary to others, I thought the OL did a great job pass blocking. The run jst wsn't their. They crowded th LOS and dared us to throw. And Pyron couldn't. But Philo can Wow. NIL. Keep this kid.
