All the “defense looked good” comments…Yall realize VT has one of the worst offenses in the country right?
Perhaps they do. But last week we gave up 24 to ND. This week 21 to VT> For 15+ years we have begged for a defense that could get 2-3 stops a game. Or defend the run. Or hold our opponents under 30 points. Are we great? No. But we are at least an average D now and the trend line is positive on this side of the ball. Something that has been too long coming imo.

Philip looks just like he did in hs. Dunno why he didn’t play all of the past 2 games. Loyalty, stubbornness, and stupidity I guess.

Think we have seen enough of Pyron. Philo has a much better shot at being the future, lets just make sure we do not burn his shirt by playing him in 5 games
Hopefully we won't need Philo to play meaningful minutes in the next 2 games. But if he does play in both those games, no way should he play in our last game. Philo fairly won the backup QB job today on the field of play in my book.
I'm still a Pyron fan though.

Disappointing. Philo needs to play before Pyron. Pyron should be emergency QB. Defensive effort was good for most of game, but we needed a shutout to win this game, and we let them trick us. Too many backups playing on both sides of the ball to get any consistent level of performance. Really poor game plan and overall strategy. This was a winnable game that we let slip away. A lot like the Syracuse and Louisville games.

At this point you have to admit we are getting out schemed and out coached by teams of similar talent. I love Brent Key, but he is doing a poor job with this team. Our punting is not even High School level good. We might get lucky and win one more, but this season is a disappointment, and I am not getting any younger.

I would start to build for next year at this point. Play Philo and the other promising freshmen and get them some experience. This is going to go down as a mediocre at best season regardless at this point.

Go Jackets!
It is 100% clear that a healthy King makes our offense a good offense. Add a healthy Haynes makes the running game much better. King did not play and the drop off to the backups is like falling off a cliff. It is very clear that Haynes in not healthy. He has no wiggle or lateral hop or burst in his game right now. We have basically one back up RB at this point.

Our receivers had uncharacteristically bad games today. Rutherford rarely drops balls. Two big ones today that killed drives. Boyd had a big drop, wouldn't have changed who won but it cost us the opportunity! Several times #5 and one of the TEs looked like they could pick up a 1st down by just running hard forward and they slowed to try and juke a defender with no success.

No, Chicken Little, the sky is not falling.

At 5-4, we are EXACTLY where all the savants predicted we would be. Are we looking sharp, like a well-oiled machine? Of course not. That's why we are 5-4 and right where we were expected to be at this point in the season.

Going forward, we can expect a loss against Miami followed by a big win at home against NC State (to get bowl eligible) followed by another loss in Athens to end the regular season at 6-6. The outcome of the Lackluster Middling Bowl depends on who our opponent is, of course.

NEXT year, we need to stay on our upward trajectory by winning at least 7 games. After that, I'd really like to see us winning eight games as a floor consistently. That will depend on recruiting and who's calling the plays on both sides of the ball two years from now.

But for now, while recognizing that 5-7 is still possible, 6-6 is what I have been expecting for this season. That appears to be the likely outcome, IMO.

They seem to have been getting better - just put up 34 on Miami, 31 on Stanford, 42 on BC in their last 3. All offensive scores, not ST/D.

And our offense gave them 13,243 possessions today.

It was a much better performance than some others that our D has put up.

If you told me before the game that VT would only score 21 points I would have told you GT wins. Still can’t believe that opponents aren’t making dumb mistakes against GT- 2 defensive interceptions in 9 games is unbelievable. No scoop and scores come to memory or special teams touchdowns. Could use a few breaks every now and then.

Agree. The FSU game blew all sanity out of our fanbase. The injuries to offensive skill players have been determinative, together with our weaker areas. 6-6 was always a very real possibility for this team.

LOL - pay attention - before today!

VT - # 32 of 138 in scoring offense at 32.1 ppg // GT - #55 in scoring offense at 30.4 ppg
VT - #65 in total offense at 398 yards / game // GT - #39 in total offense at 431 yards/game

We gain 31 more yards per game but VT scores 2 more points per game.

We are offensive peers!

I would not have complained about our high school offense if I had known it would be replaced with a middle school offense

So, the teams goal, was to be 5-4?

I agree but what else are you going to run? I like the slant. That seems to be a very successful play, but our best - Malik - was playing hurt today.
I want them to be better than me. I want them to come up with something better than just, “well, **** it. Run Jamal where everyone expects us to run him.”

Do we literally have no backup players that get reps in our offense? Are we so fragile that if these guys go down we are a 3-9 team? Our staff doesn’t have any idea what the reserves do well? It’s just frustrating to think that’s the case.

Actually that was likely the high end for this season. We are clearly a much improved defensive team. Without King the offense is bad in a word. Our STs still have major issues with the punt and punt return teams.

The future is bright people, bowl or not. Keep Philo and our current commits, and 2 good DT/DE. Philo throws the ball better than King. That's why you don't see King throwing that much. Buster has a different play set for King and Philo. The interception bounced out of our reicever's hands. I really like this kid. Sorry for Pyron, but he had his chance.
Philo sees the field. But he seemed - not fast a foot. We will see.

Simply we lack talented player depth. Nothing new for GT. Our #1 RB is clearly playing hurt. #s2-4 are all out. That leaves a true freshman who is the #5 RB as the other RB. You expect excellence from that! Nuts!

Couple that with backup QBs and presto our offense sucks!
