I loved Paul Johnson, HoF, best coach GT has had since Dodd.
I will not quibble of course on the HOF part. But imo, CBR was the best since Dodd. Case closed. Good to great in all 3 phases which its what made him a NC coach. I loved GOL's and CPJ's offenses. Gailey's defenses. But Ross was able to do all things well plus was a great recruiter to boot. Although he ws here here for a brief while and his overall record on the Flats may be tarnished by the turnaround he needed to do, I can think of just a few other coaches in my lifetime that could win a NC at GT. Maybe Spurrier or Saban??? Whomever it might be, you can name them on one hand.

He should have noticed?
You would think somebody would have noticed. I don't recall any cognizance on the part of the TV commentators about it, either. Everybody was asleep at the wheel.
Except, no doubt, the VT coaches, who of course merrily kept it under their hats. I wonder where our coaches were. The statistician must have been aware of it. Nine yards and a first down?

Even on obvious calls, our coaches don't seem to have the gumption to argue with the refs. Instead, we'd rather sit down for a spot of tea with them and politely air our grievances without making it sound like the refs messed up. I'd love nothing more than for HCBK to give a HCPJ tongue lashing to somebody on the sidelines whether that's a ref or a player when they mess up.

The yellow TV line to gain remained on the 24. I had not noticed the moved chains and line to gain marker. When the play started they said 4th and 1, and I thought no, it’s 4th and 2. Then he makes one yard and the first and I see the chain on the 25. I knew at the time something was screwed up.

The first down line on the tv screen stayed at the correct spot. The guy with the marker moved that back a yard but the tv line wasn't moved. At first I thought the tv line was wrong. It showed 2 yards whereas the marker showed 1 yard. We got cheated on that one and it was blatant the way it was done. I saw the video of the guy intentionally moving the marker. The ACC office needs to make a statement about the incident.

There won't be any statement. Look at how the ACC cleaned it up in the 2nd quarter play by play:

1st and 10 at HOKIES25(05:39) [SG] TUTEN, Bhayshul rush to the right for a gain of 41 yards to the GT34 (HARVEY, Ahmari), 1ST DOWN.
1st and 10 at GT34[NHSG] DRONES, Kyron pass to the right complete for 8 yards to SAINT GERMAIN, Harrison caught at the GT34 and advanced to the GT26 (TATUM, Trenilyas), out of bounds.
2nd and 2 at GT26[NHSG] THOMAS, Malachi rush up the middle for a loss of 4 yards to the GT30 (YONDJOUEN, Sylvain).
3rd and 6 at GT30[NHSG] DRONES, Kyron pass short to the right complete for 4 yards to GOSNELL, Benji to the GT26 (LIGHTSEY, E.J.).
4th and 2 at GT26[NHSG] QB Keeper DRONES, Kyron rush up the middle for a gain of 2 yards to the GT24 (TATUM, Trenilyas;SCOTT, Makius), 1ST DOWN.

They pretend the chains were never moved and gave the QB two yards to the 24 when he obviously only gained one to the 25.
If they issue a statement, which they won't, they should explain further why they lied in the play-by-play description.

Who is responsible for keeping the play-by-play stats? Is it the ACC, or someone assigned from VT Football Operations?

We were behind at the time 7-6 and we never scored again, eventually losing 21-6. It’s hard to make a case that the play was determinative, but it sure changed the arc of the game.

It's not clear cut because they would probably have run a different play had they been required to go two yards instead of one. I'm just amazed it happened and nobody said anything through 2nd down, 3rd down, and fourth down. Not a peep.

It would have been really weird if Tech had brought it all to their attention after they were given the first down at the 25. The refs would have to take it away, I guess. Our ball. Then VT would be howling about their incompetence instead of us.

Key said he didn't challenge because he heard over the radio they had made the 1st down. It was al BS.

Should have been noticed in the booth, hard to see from the field. The DC should have been well aware of where the original first down marker was placed and where the ball ended up. It was apparent to some of us watching on tv.
Another critical mistake in our game coaching by our staff, but somewhat understood because this is first season for Santucci. He is doing a great job overall in my opinion.
Game coaching is a work in progress for this staff.

TBH, I doubt that the defensive staff in the booth has on their to do list to watch out for the chain crew, that they don’t move the line to gain.

57, I still complain about the refs breaking the chain in COFH back in 1971. Lot’s of life left in this one.

I certainly don't have it on my watch list and yet it was obvious to me. Should have been to them also.

Yeah, nobody's expecting anything like that or watching for it, and these coaches have a lot of other things to think about, but it still seems like it should have jumped out at somebody. If an aide of some sort were designated to watch the TV monitor (maybe there is such a person?), he/she could readily see it. There are no challenge flags in college football, but coaches can jawbone the refs into a replay or to look into it.
