I've heard a million times that B-Back play is what makes this offense go. It's the axis by which this offense spins, and the inertia that keeps it moving. If that's the case, then the Jackets are in good hands this year, with returning War Horses Zack Laskey and David Sims rotating as the bell cow of this system. Sims, who staked a small lead in total carries, 135-133, looks to take even another step forward and develop the ability to punish defenders while finishing runs. Laskey, who's story reads like Odysseus, looks to stay healthy and punish more defenders with a devastating will to push for extra yards and a pair of legs that churn like froth in front of a battleship. Laskey doesn't so much run over defenders as he does repel them with his shoulder and thigh pads. He also has the ability to break big runs, with his longest TD carry being 56 yds. last year.

Charles Perkins, who officially made the switch to A-Back last year, may yet have a say on the "give" mechanism in option plays in pistol and shotgun, and I wouldn't mid seeing Travis Custis give it a go this year too, although a redshirt seems likely. Broderick Snoddy played the position in high school, but has yet to stick somewhere at the college level. This might be his future home...

Starter: David Sims (barely)
Key Backup: Zack Laskey
Keep an eye on: Travis Custis

Nice Stats comparison. This says a lot. (fwiw, JD's numbers are for Soph and Jr seasons)

Oh, he left early then... I did not get beyond just watching the games and knowing players before last year.

Matt Connor will get some runs too..
Snoddy per Vad is doing great in 7 on 7 drills..
It'll be an interesting rotation.

Blocking, Blocking, Blocking! I don't know how many times JD took a BB counter to Bey Bey's side, And the CB had been DEMOLISHED and Bey Bey was on his way inside to crack the Safety Just sayin, JD had the best perimeter blocking that this offense has ever had. Waller is big enough to be Bey Bey II when it comes to taking 2 guys out of a play.

Yes and No. There is no doubt that WR blocking was one of our biggest challenges last year and to a lesser extent 10 and 11. However, I think it would be a mistake to reduce the difference to just blocking. Dwyer both made guys miss and trucked guys better than anyone who came after him and Ant did this better than Sims, Lyons, and Laskey. As a result, I think we ran plays to pitch it to Dwyer to get him the ball in space much more frequently than we've run those plays for the last couoople of years.

Is Dwyer the prototypical B-Back then? Is he the ideal? I worry that we will never see the same combination of size, speed and elusiveness again at that position. Just my two cents of course, but he was such a high caliber player and was a homerun threat every play. I miss that. I think Snoddy has the speed to take it the distance if he has a big enough lane to run through though.
