You said yourself that he’s likely to leave at the end of the year because he’s not getting to play a.k.a. lack of opportunity. And, by saying that you’re basically also saying that playing as a freshman is not a rare opportunity, it’s expected these days, or else.

The post stated that he’s getting a rare opportunity. I’m saying what opportunity? He’s not playing, and if he were playing, it wouldn’t be rare.

Now as to why he is not playing that’s another question. Maybe it is that CDS doesn’t see the effort of the desire in practice. If that is the case then yeah that’s on Sutton.

I guess I just didn’t agree with the romantic sentiment of a wonderful and rare opportunity. The kid was recruited on merit to play basketball. He’s supposed to be a good basketball player.

Oh well, nothing really to argue about.
No, that's not what I said at all... I said the fact that he can't crack the rotation should tell you all you need to know. Unless something happened, he could go.

In short, he's not working hard enough or making enough of an impression in practice to earn PT, when half the team was injured (i.e. he wasn't taking advantage of his opportunity).

The ships are too valuable to be occupied by someone not willing to work hard and fall in love with the little things.

Actually @Connell62 , I don’t know if you said it or if Root said it about Sutton possibly moving on. If I misattributed that statement to you then my bad.

ETA: yeah, i misattributed that statement to you @Connell62 my bad. Otherwise, I stand by my take on the Sutton situation.

No, not necessarily lack of opportunity. Your opportunity to earn game time is in practice. That's where he has the opportunity. We're not in practice, but from what CDS has insinuated, he hasn't taken advantage of the opportunity given.

I think he has the potential to be a rockstar. Don't know what's holding him back (CDS or himself), but he'll either turn the corner or he'll turn the page.

Edit: I really should read the entire thread before responding to a post from at least the day before.

My comment if he continues to not get playing time the portal is likely. That is a statement I would make for any highly rated freshmen playing on any team.

Not many hang around hoping to get minutes as upper class men.

For what it’s worth, from what I’ve seen on the court I wouldn’t play Sutton major minutes right now either. If that means he hits the portal then that’s his decision. He is a highly skilled player but he doesn’t convert on the offensive end or stand up on the defensive end. At least not right now. Don’t take that to think I don’t think he has talent -he does - but he just needs to work on his craft for a while to break into major minutes like a lot of freshman

Can anybody think of an example of a player who "lacked passion" for the game early in their career and learned to have it later? Maybe Eddie Elisma?

I thought Sutton would play this year. Hasn't happened. Powell has taken command of that Jumbo Wing spot and Powell has a year of eligibility remaining. Then you have Sylla arriving next season which allows Ndongo to move over to Forward (if any of those guys come back).

I think Root's reasoning is sound in that a highly rated recruit that doesn't play seems to be in the highest vulnerability bracket to skedaddle in the off season.

FWIW, I can't think of a more damning criticism of a player than a coach saying "I want to see more passion" from that player. I can't spin that to be anything but really bad.
