Georgia Tech vs. NC State (-8)

Could be worse...we could be Syracuse. The NC State game was about the third game I have seen them play where they could have pulled out a win but just did not make the plays in crunch time. College football, other than for the elite factories, is a tough business with the difference between a win and a loss for most teams is razor thin. This is a team we beat pretty good last year but they are much better this year on both sides of the ball with the possible exception of running the ball. They are not a very good running team this year which we may be able to take advantage of this week.

Yup. The big difference when we played them is that we gave them 5 turnovers. If you go back and look up the play-by-play, we had 10 possessions where we didn't hand them the ball and they had 15 where they didn't hand us the ball. If each team on those possessions averages 3 points per drive, that's 15 more points for them. Moreover, 1 of those takeaways didn't result in a possession for them, it was a defensive TD, so you're talking a 3 score difference due to that turnover margin...roughly speaking. Its hard to even beat a Syracuse if you spot them 21 points. And it was nearly the exact same dynamic with Boston College (we handed them 21 points early) and UCF (we handed them 21 points late). As many have said, that's been our calling card this year - if we stick to around 2 turnovers or less, we'll be in the game and have a good chance to win. If we have more than that, we're probably behind 15-20 points. Plus, we are handicapped about 2-3 points a game because we can't kick field goals.

Just look at last weeks games. We beat a very bad Dook team handily, NCSU beat a very bad SU with a 4th qtr comeback. That would favor us pulling out a win, IMO.
However, 4 things bother me about the game:
1) We have done terrible when we don't have but one week to prepare.
2) NCSU QB Hockman was 23 of 31 for 300 + yards , 4 TDs, 1 Int.. He is a Sr. FSU transfer from Powder Springs, Ga. IMO.he is definitely more of a threat than Brice at Duke.
3) Hockman was sacked 6 times ,but still lit up SU. Will our D be up to the challenge and play like last week, or revert to SU and BC level ?
4) If the game is close- which I predict- will our STs be up to the challenge.
All things considered, I think we lose a close one, but cover the spread. Hope I am wrong... and we WIN !!

Here is something that I may have been missed in this thread and I was thinking of starting a new thread, but...

Six teams (BC,WF,Pitt,GT,FSU,Syr.) play both Notre Dame and Cemson.

Six teams (UM,UNC,VT,UVA,Lville,Duke) play only one, Notre Dame or Clemson.

ONLY ONE TEAM (NC State) plays NEITHER NOTRE DAME NOR CLEMSON.

Somehow, by fluke or whatever…, NC State has a decided advantage over all the others as far as record, final standings and bowl (?) opportunities. If NC State had played both ND and Clemson as six of the unluckier teams have, they might well be 4-5 now instead of 6-3.
Damn, NC State is now getting favorable treatment that used to be reserved for Carolina. They are feeling mighty uppity these days.

I get what you're saying, but NCSU isn't favored against us because they have a better record, but because they are perceived to be the better football team. Sure, NCSU could well be 5-5 right now. (6-3 is their conference record, they are 7-3 overall) but we would only be 4-5 had we beaten Syracuse. (We weren't favored against BC)

In the end, I think we can beat NCSU because of two reasons: talent and timing. I think we have as much if not more talent on the offensive skill positions as NCSU does right now, Nd the later this season gets, the more cohesive the unit becomes with all the practice time and game time behind them. My only worry is that the defense has been wildly inconsistent and won't make enough stops to enable the win. Even if we end up losing, I think it will be a competitive game, and if nothing else, we can take solace that CDP has our offense moving in a positive direction.
Syracuse sacked the State quarterback six times, led at half time, led at the end of the third quarter, all but shut down the State running game and still managed to find a way to lose. It's a wonder Dino hasn't pulled out what little hair he has left by now.

Perspective is always interesting. You could also say NCSU still managed to find a way to win. Both are correct.

They were up by two going into the 4th quarter. They only scored once in their last 8 possessions. That doesn't really feel like finding a way to lose. They just didn't do enough to win.

Well, they had their chances and in typical, for this year anyway, fashion still lost and it is not their first time in doing this.
