Yeah people not caring is wild. The little number next to your name brings eyeballs and we desperately need eyeballs right now both for building our brand to make us attractive to the P2 and literally directly impacting our current ACC payouts.
This, plus at some point you have to be able to handle being ranked, especially if you want to be a top team. Tech isn't going to sit at #27 all season winning games and then magically jump into the top 10 at the end of the season for having no losses.

My take is the rankings still have some influence on who gets into the final 12 teams. If we don't win the ACC championship, that may be important. I know it' s a stretch to think about that at this point in the season. I like being ranked personally, but even I didn't, I think it might be helpful.
We just need to keep winning and the rankings will take care of itself.

Better rankings means more exciting looking games going into it. More exciting games means more eyeballs. More eyeballs means more of the all mighty dolla dolla bills. And more money means getting to pay for bigger recruits. And the cycle shall continue

ETA: early rankings both mean nothing and something. So while I’m not worried about us not being ranked, saying it doesn’t mean anything is crazy with what it comes with in today’s age of tv sharing revenue and ranking bias.

Spread down to Clemson -4.5 now:

Or -4:

If they watched that Troy game, it is no wonder that it dropped.

Living near Tiger town, I tend to listen to their flagship radio, all the time, as well as read commentary in their forum pages.
It has been some time, since there has been this much doom and gloom on it..

I'm loving the anxiety that is brewing!!
Understandable, the Tigers came out last week flat as I have ever seen them. For all the supposed talent and they do have more than their share of it, they are like an old car sputtering along and dropping parts on the road. Maybe they will be this year's version of FSU?

You know what's crap? If we beat Clemson by a couple scores, we'll maybe, maybe make it up to #18 or so, despite having a better resume than LSU. It'll be seen as proof that Clemson's not good, but LSU won't be affected by that, only us.
You expect something different in that scenario? If we beat UNC in that scenario, the Tar Heels would go higher in the polls and we would go lower.

Spoken like a true Tech man with the equation neatly explaining the reasoning.
I've just noticed this formula will get you pretty close to the post-game ranking. If the lesser ranked team wins, just average the two rankings going in and that will usually be very near where the upset winner lands.

I would HOPE that logic would come into play, but I don't expect it to, hence my comment.

No they wouldn't and that has never happened. My comment was based on a real scenario that could happen, not hyperbolic nonsense.

If they're like FSU last season, a win by Tech will finish them off.

Recent years when Tech knocked off a ranked Clemson team:

1997 Clemson #17 (Tech unranked) GT 23 - Clemson 20
2000 Clemson #5 (Tech unranked) GT 31 - Clemson 28
2004 Clemson #20 (Tech unranked) GT 28 - Clemson 24
2007 Clemson #13 (Tech unranked) GT 13 - Clemson 3
2011 Clemson #6 (Tech unranked) GT 31 - Clemson 17
2014 Clemson #19 (Tech was ranked #22) GT 28 - Clemson 6

and they were ranked when we won the ACC championship in 2009
