Another thread had a discussion on what the Coach Johnson phrase "efforts" means with a lot of guess's about it.

In Coach Johnson lingo an "effort" is short for a "lack of effort". So an effort is a negative thing. You want as few "efforts" as possible. I'm not sure if he uses the phrase "missed assignments" interchangeablely with "efforts" or not and exactly what if any differences are. But I asked him about efforts once and he told me quote, "it's short for lack of effort."

Coach specifically said something to the effect that effort was not the problem with the ND game but that it was purely missed assignments like blocking the wrong guy or running the wrong way. That makes me think that it was not efforts that was the issue in that game

Efforts are all encompassing. Both physical and mental. Whether you don't give full effort on a play or have a brain cramp on the field and don't fulfill your assignment
