FSU v. Citadel

I am surprised there has not been more talk about FSU's game against the Citadel earlier this year. They intentionally scheduled them to keep familiar with our offense. I am not one of the resident experts on this board, but my understanding is that the Citadel offense is a fair bit like ours (at least a lot more than the Auburn type option offenses).

On its face, the game this year looks like a complete blowout and does not bode well for us. Under the surface though, I am not sure that is entirely true. While the Citadel lost 37-12 and failed to score until the 4th quarter, they still managed to rack up 322 total yards, were 11-17 on third down, and won the time of possession 33:35 to 26:25. So, it does sound like they were able to move the ball, even if they weren't able to score points. BOX SCORE

How about some of you option gurus take a look at the tape and let us know what you see/think:

The Citadels offense looks like slow motion compared to ours. I think that we're goin to have to force a couple of turnovers, I have a feeling that they are going to run alot of read option against us, similar to Unc and Duke. We need to get up on them and grind the clock, and make them grind the clock against themselves.

I mean Citadel is an FCS school. Just because they were dominated, I wouldn't say it doesn't "bode well for us". I would completely expect FSU to dominate them no matter what offense they were running

Watched until FSU went up 28-0. It appeared that Citadel got to the edge pretty regularly and for good yardage. I heard the announcer say at one point the Citadel was above 4 yards per carry. The couple of times that Citadel tried to pass the receiver was open but they either dropped the pass or the QB threw a terrible pass. From watching that I actually feel better about our chances on Offense. We are much faster at every phase of the game on offense and our OL is much quicker and larger than that of the Citadel. If this same D shows up on Saturday I don't see any reason we don't drop at least 30+ points on them.

Everyone is focusing on the "bode well" portion of my post. I understand that the Citadel is not a powerhouse and that Georgia Tech is much better. I just meant that a first look at the box score indicates that FSU had a good bit of success in game planning and completely shutting down a team that runs a similar offense to ours. While it does not mean everything, I think the games can be somewhat instructive regarding how well a team can game plan against a particular offense. That is all I meant. (Remember Georgia Southern was FCS last year and beat Florida.)

I was really looking to open a dialog for analysis on that front. How did FSU game plan? How well did they do? Did they look incredibly sound, or did they look wild but just physically dominate the Citadel? Of course, the answer to those questions really doesn't say much about the upcoming game with Tech, but neither does any other analysis until toe meets leather ; )

Watching that tape FSU looked really bad against Citadel defensively. They had no discipline or pitch responsibility on the edge and they only controlled the dive because they are so much bigger than citadel. If they play defense like that, PJ will eat their lunch Saturday night.

If they play with that kind of discipline, particularly on the edge, we will rack up over 450 yards rushing. You can quote me on that.

OAN...I kinda think the o-line will play with a chip on its shoulder after being slighted for the All ACC team, kinda like the team has all season about all of the prognosticators....just a gut feeling

I have said, since watching that game two weeks ago, that we would set offensive records against FSU. The Citadel runs a bad version of our option with small, slow, weak players. The FSU players look like they are never sure what is going on.

The Citadel wasn't stopped by FSU; they stopped themselves. The pass was open all game but the QB couldn't get the ball anywhere near the wide open receivers. FSU would have been embarrassed if that QB could have hit anyone.
