ESPN Power Ratings and PreSeason Rankings

So ESPN produced 2014 Preseason Rankings based on a feaux FPI (Football Power Index) measure, based on previous year, who's left, Recruiting Rankings, etc (near as I can tell). It should be noted that during the season they distinguish between their FPI rankings and their CDR (Championship Drive Rating) which looks at W-L vs probability of W-L given strength of schedule.

So, we can compare their preseason FPI estimate to past years' FPI:

(oops, there was a problem with pasting the table)

From this, it appears that they've redone how they're calculating offense pts added. For 2014 projections, double digit was top 10.

It appears they have us getting worse in every category and falling out of the top 20 in offense.

Does it matter what ESPN thinks? If we take care of business, we'll get enough national exposure to put us in the polls and on the radar. The fact that we're different makes us undervalued, but it has an advantage: we become the media darlings if we kick butt. We were all over SECSPN in 2011 till the wheels fell off in game 7. We were ranked #13 going into the UVa game.

Perhaps they'd do well to look at how often their predictions about Tech have been wrong. You can look at our streak of winning seasons alone, and assume 6-6 probably is unlikely.

So yeah... don't really put much stock into what the Worldwide Leader in Hype has to say.
