I had to miss this game—I was traveling. I’m out for this week. I got to watch the replay.

I had a lot of fun watching how Babers McGuyver’ed that offense. He was limited to a mostly one dimensional offense before he ever took the field, and if he had made those changes weeks ago he’d probably be bowl-eligible already. I think his job was gone after this season, but with one game left to make a bowl, and a winnable game at that, I’m sad his athletic board didn’t let him take a swing at that last game. I think his AD was scared he’d be more difficult to fire after making a bowl game, and that he would win that game.

On defense, I tip my hat to our defensive coaches, and to our linebackers. Our LBs have caught a lot of flak this season, and they played really well and made a bunch of tackles. Moala made a great strip tackle on special teams. Efford had the game sealing interception. In the third period, Syracuse made a bunch of great plays, combined with taking advantage of some of our turnovers. Tatum made some great plays with his speed. Our DL was really active. There were five or more tacklers on a lot of plays. Stoning Syracuse on third or fourth and short a couple of times was really impressive.

On offense, Faulkner has a lot of H-back plays in the game, and it looks like it’s supposed to be a big part of his offense. We just haven’t seen as much of that as you might think, because I think the tight ends are still learning how to play that way. Syracuse used their big TE as a fullback and a bull of a running back, and I think we have the same ideas—but we haven’t implemented a lot of that. On King’s last running TD, he had an H-back escort into the end zone (with no one to block—our line crushed Syracuse on that play).

On a Haynes King sack, the blitzer came in like a flash from the edge, untouched. Syracuse played their tails off.

Syracuse blocked so much better than us on kickoffs, it’s amazing. That was one factor that kept them in the game.

On offense and defense, there’s a lot we can do and add in once we get to a basic level of play. When we started the season, we had a steak and lobster appetite for what we’d do, but we had a value meal readiness for tackling, fundamentals, and what the TEs were ready to do. On defense, especially, there’s a need to stay low on the DL and there was a need to tackle better and try to get 11 men around the ball. I think the TEs looked better against Cuse than they did in some other games.

Bowl practices have the potential to make a huge difference in this team. There are a lot of areas where players need extra reps and still need to learn the offense we put in this year.

I'm glad you brought up kickoffs. I have been wondering what has happened there. For most of the year we have done a pretty good job of booming kickoffs deep into the end zone eliminating the worry of returns. For the past week or so we seem to be kicking them short and with less height on the kickoffs. Has Stewart suffered an injury? Or has the field goal issues he had led to some technical problems on kickoffs as well?

I’m not responding to the poster you responded to, because they by their own admission had not posted in a while, but thought our Syracuse win would be a great time to undermine other fan’s celebration of the W and appreciation of the progress the team has made since Key took over. Some have called that trolling, and I try not to take the bait.

While your responses are quite valid and correct, you’re arguing (or at least making a valiant effort to explain reality) with someone who simply makes up strawmen in an apparent effort to be a contrarian. Everyone is entitled to share their opinion, but if this poster isn't just making stuff up/trolling, then they have some of the worst reading comprehension that I’ve seen on this board, or are living in an alternate reality. You are more patient than I.
You’re right. I took the bait. I tried to understand the what and why of his comments before I realized just how much he wanted us to climb down into the dark hole he is in.

I never will understand why our fans want to denigrate Tech so often. We led that game in the 4th. If your ahead in the 4th you should win the game, IMPO.
That is simply false. Based on that we had no business beating UNC or Miami. Teams trailing going into the 4th qtr Winn all the time, especially if they are a better team which based on the full season Louisville is clearly a better team this year than GT.

The truth is Louisville is and was a better team than GT. We has
D a chance to pull off the upset but fell short. No shame losing to a 10-1 team playing for the Conference Championship. That was a big game for GT as it showed that clearly we were not the pathetic offense of the prior 4 years.

If you're leading in the 4th quarter, you ought to win. You may not win, but you ought to win. It's the way I was coached, and it's my opinion. You can think differently.

Hi, was this response meant for someone else? Not sure how it applies to my comments.

“If we have great talent and a great coaching staff like many proclaim then it’s time to start seeing results.”

OK, I’ve been trying to understand where the heck you are coming from, and this last sentence clarifies it a little.

You are having trouble understanding what people are saying because you are attributing states of mind to people based on your own disappointment, which you have shared.

So, since neither you nor I can read minds, less just clarify what people have been actually saying.

Many have not been proclaiming we have great talent. Just the opposite. Multiple threads have random comments about recruiting or the portal. Multiple times people have acknowledged the loss of defensive talent and the need to replace those. Specifically people have been critical of our linebackers and lack of a good pass rusher. On offense an entire thread was devoted to getting Smith more playing time as well as larger conversations about needing a big bruising running back. Prior to the season there was lots of gnashing of teeth about having lost our best WRs. I could go on but I hope you don’t bury the lead here, which is, virtually everyone has talked about our talent deficit. If we get a little giddy that some players have exceeded expectation then you will understand. Talent wise this looked like a four win team before the season. I doubt anyone could have foreseen that we would bring in someone like King at QB.

Many have not been claiming this is a great coaching staff either. A consensus is building that Key is our guy, based off the turnaround in his first season, but beyond the quarterback coach, there is not an overwhelming proclamation of greatness. There are even two other entire threads that suggest otherwise, one on finding a new DC and one on whether we should pick up Fischer from A&M. And if that is not enough, some are still carrying the torch for “coaches that got away” like Chadwell. So your perception is wrong that a majority have proclaimed this a great coaching staff. We understand that this is a work in process. And, again, many have great hopes for key and hope the coaching staff comes together. But the final configuration is an unknown.

As to your overall premise that we should have done much better, based on who we should beat, and based on results of other team’s games in the ACC, the guys at Tech who were actually paying attention in class can tell you the term for this and why it is a poor form of analysis that yields little meaningful data. Simply put, who in the ACC, other than undefeated FSU, did not lose at least one game to someone they shouldn’t have? Seriously. That is the nature of football now, unless you are one of the top four teams in the country. Fans of virtually every other team in the ACC have games where they lament “if only we had won that game.” These regrets tell us little about what should actually have happened on the field.

I hope this helps you understand what a majority on here are actually saying as a clue to people’s feelings about the season.
Lots of words, good post, although I got tired at the end. I'd give it a 6.5, with the understanding that your syntax coordinator and maybe D line coach could use an upgrade in the offseason. Here we come Brittanica.com Bowl!

I don't know why I'm answering this as the answer is obvious. However, here goes...

We had a 28-13 lead at the half and a 28-23 lead at the end of the 3rd. You lead in the 4th and you should win.

We lost 39-35 having missed 2 FGs that Birr would have likely made and having failed on a 2-point conversion that we likely would have kicked. That's another 7 points we left on the field. All that, even with our second half swoon, would have been enough to win.

You say yeah, but... we swooned in the 2nd half? Yes, but they swooned in the 1st half. We won the first half 28-13 and lost the second half 26-6. With the above-mentioned change at PK - Birr was on the roster and for some unknown reason wasn't kicking - that game tilts our way.
There was more swooning in that game than usually done by prima donnas at an opera.

Saying that we should have lost to a team that has proven to be substantially better than us this season is not denigrating Tech. You are free to your opinion, and a good debate is why these boards exist. Assuming that people who disagree with you think less about their team than you do is just hubris.

To be honest I get tired of long posts also. There were just so many assumptions and unsubstantiated claims in the post I was responding to.

When I post and get a few negative responses, I can live with that. Chocolate and vanilla.

When I post and mob with torches and pitchforks forms, odds are the problem is not with the mob.

So it’s everybody else’s fault for responding to your douchy debbie-downer post? Ok.

Man, don’t you get it? He’s the only one on here being logical, calling a spade a spade, using the clear insight of reason, demanding excellence and rejecting mediocrity. The rest of us have settled for supporting a terrible team with incompetent coaches and are covering for that by being irrationally exuberant for no good reason. He is just wiser and more mature than all the rest of us.

Sure. I’m one of the main ones who say it’s OK to disagree. I don’t think that’s the issue. What I refer to specifically in this case is that for some reason, when Tech leads in the 4th quarter, our (good) fans cannot allow that our team “should” win that game. I’ll guarantee you that both Miami and UNC feel like they should have won their games with us. I’ll guarantee you that Smart’s team feels like they should win any game they lead in the 4th. In fact, I’ll guarantee you, were you to ask them, that Brent Key and his staff feel like they should win any game in which they have a 4th quarter lead. At that point you’ve won 3/4 of the game and only have to win the final 1/4. Why is it that Tech cannot do adopt that position as well? This I don’t understand and I feel like it reflects a lower opinion of our program.

Sorry, that’s my opinion and you all are free to disagree. I still consider such a person, in this case Root, a great fan. But I have to ask why GA Tech cannot believe they “should” win a game that they’ve already won 3/4 of.

Weirdly, the entrenchment on this issue obscures an obvious fact. The opposing team may be better than you but that doesn’t mean they automatically should come back from a fourth quarter deficit and beat you. Most teams with fourth quarter leads, no matter what the pregame odds were, usually win.
