Former Tech WR Corey Dennis served as Ohio State’s QB coach last year and will do so again this year. Meaning his resumé is soon gonna include Justin Fields, CJ Stroud, and Quinn Ewers.

He went up to OSU after marrying Urban Meyer’s daughter Nikki (former Tech Volleyball player) and has worked his way up since then.

I don’t know much about his coaching/recruiting up there but you’ve gotta imagine he’s doing well to hold that role for OSU. And the names he’s coaching would give him some clout elsewhere in recruiting QBs. I wonder how much it would take to lure him away down the road to come back home. Guessing it would have to be at least a promotion to OC. He’s currently making $300K at OSU (Patenaude is making $400K as OC/QB coach) so we’d probably need him to give us a hometown discount too.

Not trying to make this a “we need a change” thread. But it never hurts to have former alums climbing the coaching ranks and I think he’ll be a name that pops up over the years when we have openings.

He’s from Alabama. The Meyers are from the South. Maybe the prospect of being closer to family would help. They do have two younger kids.

Since Brent Key is listed as "Assistant Head Coach/Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line", was previously a Division 1 offensive coordinator, and already makes more than the offensive coordinator, I would think that if a change were made he would probably get the nod up to OC before bringing Dennis in. I also think that if anyone from the outside were brought in as the OC that Key would move on to somewhere else. (and justifiably so)

But seriously, his wife and father-in-law might not want him uprooted.

Something to think about:

Dennis played under CPJ, one of the best minds for the rushing game in football history. If you don't think so, ask Urban Meyer and Bill Belichek. Both coaches famously went to CPJ to study his running schemes. Urban was just smart in that he dressed up CPJ's schemes to make it "non triple option" friendly. Also look up the top rushing teams in college football in the last 10-15 years and you'll see coaches/schemes that were influenced by CPJ.

Taking it a step further, Dennis started his coaching career under Urban Meyer, architect of some of the best offenses in college football history...offenses credited with the rise of the "dual threat" QBs.

Now Dennis is coaching under Ryan Day, who is considered one of the best football minds in all of football in this era. Not only is Dennis coaching under Day, but he's responsible for developing the most important position in Day's offense: the QB. Dennis is also doing it VERY well if you go by what past and present Buckeye QBs (Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, Joe Burrow) have said.

Another layer here: Ryan Day coached for Chip Kelley in the NFL. Kelley, at one time considered one of the best offensive minds in all of football, produced record breaking offenses at Oregon. Ryan Day undoubtedly took a lot of offensive concepts from Kelley and incorporated into the modern day "Ryan Day offense".

If you want to talk about someone who is getting a PHD under the best football minds, Corey Dennis is no doubt getting an elite education in coaching to start his coaching career. Dennis is also able to apply that knowledge to help QBs produce on the field...which is the most important aspect in all of this.

I think Dennis is probably going to be in the same conversation as Ryan Day, Urban Meyer, Paul Johnson, and Chip Kelley in the next 5-10 years. Hopefully, it will be at GT and he can do for GT what Day/Meyer/Kelley did, respectively, for Ohio State/Florida/Oregon.

Careful. You are flirting with the notion that running the football actually works, and that as fruity as Johnson's alignment looked, when it went into gear it could be a thing of beauty. I see the RPO and zone reads in today's offenses and wonder why they even call it an option.

As for Dennis, obviously it pays to marry well.

And it paid off. I don't know if any of you remember Meyer's Utah teams when Smith was their QB, but they were essentially a trips running team, just like UF when Meyer had Tebow. True, both teams passed more then Paul's teams usually did (remember Vad Lee?), but these were triple option running teams at bottom. OSU is today as well.

Ha! If you've seen and know about Nicki Meyer, you know Corey did VERY well in the wife department...and that would be true even if Nicky wasn't Urban's daughter. Of course, Corey is earning everything on his own merits. Dude is gonna be a heck of a head coach one day...and I hope to see him leading GT to glory one of these days. Story book ending for Corey and Nicki to make well at Ma Tech.

Without denigrating Dennis at all as he obviously has done well, but the notion that he is earning everything on his own merits ignores the path he took beginning with Meyer at OSU, a job he got because, well, he married the boss's daughter. It my look abrupt but it's not. All of us needed and got various breaks along the way and he is no different. I am a big believer that nobody does it completely on his own. (I got my first job as a lifeguard at the city pool when I dived in to rescue a blonde 6-year-old in over her head and going deeper. After that I was offered the job. It probably did not hurt that the kid was the mayor's daughter.)

I hope he continues to do well and gets his own dream job one day.
