Commissioner Phillips on CFP and Championship games. Obviously pushing for both ACC participants being in the CFP. Clemson will not likely be in the top 12 after their USCe loss. If Clemson wins the Championship game, hopefully SMU will remain as an at large Team.

“If, after tomorrow night, if you’re inside of that top 12 or so, and you’re projected to be in (the bracket), it would be very alarming for you to be moved out because you played an extra game while everyone else is sitting home," Phillips said, according to The Athletic's Nicole Auerbach. "You cannot and should not be penalized for having to play a 13th game after a very long season. So, we’ll see how that plays out, but I’m very confident that the committee is going to stand by what they’ve told us.”

The ACC’s interest in this debate centers on SMU, ranked No. 9 at 11-1, and their upcoming ACC title game against No. 12 Clemson. If the Mustangs fall to the 9-3 Tigers, could they potentially be left out of the playoff in favor of one of the three-loss SEC teams in Alabama, Ole Miss, or South Carolina?

I kinda hate commissioners commenting on this stuff. It was pretty obvious already but the intense desire to get 2 teams into the CFP leads me to believe every toss up call and maybe some bonus calls are just going to go Clemson's way on Saturday. The ACC was pretty shameless about letting the league office call the shots while Miami was their golden boy. They were gifted wins against Cal and VT but thankfully the ACC could not push them over the finish line against us and rob us of a very special Saturday afternoon in Bobby Dodd.

SMU should be in regardless of the ACC CG.
To me that goes for all the CG. If a team is in before playing that game they should be in regardless of the outcome (like college basketball). Otherwise the idea of "i'd rather not make the conference championship" actually has merit.

If a team is not 'in' before the game then they should have to win it. A bid stealer in college basketball terms. Clemson is probably the only team with that issue this year.

I'll also add, that comparing schedules and results, if IND is a 'lock' and PSU is a lock then SMU should be a 'lock'.
SMU's results are better than either of those programs.
SMU has 5 wins against P4 Teams with at least 7 wins (including 2 on the road) and 3 wins against P4 teams with at least 8+ wins. IND has 0 wins against teams with more than 8 wins (their only win against a team with a winning record is a home win vs 7-5 MI). They haven't won a road game against a team with more than 5 wins. PSU has 1 win over a P4 team with 8+ wins (home against Ill) and a second win at 7-5 MN. They don't have a road win against a team with a better than 6-6 record.

SMU's resume is sneaky good. They have 5 wins against P4 teams with at least 7 wins - that ties them with UGA for the most. They have 4 wins against P4 teams with a .500 or better conference record (only UGA has more - 5). They have 3 wins against P4 teams with 8+ wins (only AL has more - 4). They are one of only 2 teams (BYU is the other) that has multiple road wins against P4 teams with 8+ wins. Their only loss is a 3-pt loss to a 10 win team with a different starting QB than they have now (they are 9-0 with their current starting QB).

First, tell the G5 to have their own playoff.
Second, take the top 2 teams from each P4 conference.
Third, use the CCG as the first round of the CFP.
Fourth, schedule the four winners as has been done for the last 10 years.
Fifth, tell the indies to get in a conference or be left out. [Looking at you, Notre Dame]

There is no reason a team that finished no better than 3rd in their own conference should play for a national championship.

Crazy to me that the Big 12 winner is cheering hard for UNLV. If they beat Boise, they will jump from a 12 seed to 4 and get a bye.

I’m sure these rankings will be massaged to get the matchups they want. IMO, no 3 loss team should host a game, unless it’s the 8/9.

If Clemson beats SMU, then the real politicking begins. Can SMU stay in while bama moves to 13?
