Maybe not the top 3, but they were top ten and made the playoffs with the QB that Lawrence replaced.

Yes and that dude was a stud too. Maybe they have another stud waiting in the wings. Time will tell. Their current #2 is solid but not in the league as TL and not as good as the guy TL replaced.

I agree that Brice, the guy who subbed for TL, doesn’t look to be as good, at least based on Thursday night. But the real stud is supposed to be the true freshman who will be ready when TL goes pro.

I'm guessing you're referring to DJ Uiagalelei ( #3 overall, #1 pro style QB) who will arrive next year along with a 5star RB. Luckily they only got three 5 star DL's coming in next year so maybe there's hole there to punch thru over the next 5 years or so ............

Well that's a poor comparison with all due respect. I hope we're successful with the NCAA offense but I believe we'll have to recruit better. I believe in getting behind our coach and let him do his job including the staff we have now. Personally I believe if you're short personnel doing something nobody else does gives you a better chance.

Umm, we needed to recruit better when we were doing something nobody else was doing. We were in a death spiral where recruiting was weak and the scheme couldn't overcome the disparity in talent. CPJ said early on during his time here that talent can overcome any scheme. He was right.

As Boomer pointed out some time ago, we recruited just fine. For a spread option. Check the stats on O. That was never the problem. Just last year we were 2nd in the country (2 ypg behind Army) in rushing and had a winning season. The talent we had fitted what we were doing on O. And wasn't that highly rated because we were doing what "nobody else was doing".

Now, we are going to need those top 25 - 30 classes going forward to win at a higher rate, as people expect. I think (i.e. hope) our present players will prove out in line with what the coaches are saying, but we desperately need more help on the DL. That's always a hard sell for Tech. I don't have as many fears there as some do. I don't doubt that Coach being a D specialist will make for a better sell to DL players going forward. However, these are the most sought after players in the country; we need to give the new program time.

With all due respect, I call BS when you say "we recruited just fine." We had no passing threat even when it was needed (i.e., when running the ball was not sufficient), we had slow linebackers, undersized DL, and WR that could not separate from CB's. Our W-L record was in decline. Our best years were with talent on D (DMorgan, VWalker, MBurnett) and O (Dwyer DThomas, JThomas, SMason).

We did not recruit well enough. If we had, the current team would not be having any issues transitioning to a new offense and D players would not look so outmanned against Clemson. CGC is urgently trying to upgrade talent via transfers and recruiting. Our old scheme was an equalizer, to be sure, but it stopped being so when talent was matched by teams like Duke, UVA, Pitt, MTSU, UNC, et al.

Look at Boomer's post on offensive production. I don't have the time to find it, but it addresses this "we weren't recruiting well" business. He says it better then I did.

As to decline: discounting the injury sunami year of 2015, Tech was 9 - 4, 5 -7, and 7 - 6 in the last three years. Not great, except for 2016, but we had some bad luck in that both Jordan and Ratliff (ah, what could have been) were forced out of football by injury. No doubt we would have done better if the normal sequence of players at QB and BB had been possible. Losing our starting BB for two straight years (2017, 2018) did not help.

No argument about the D, but that has been Tech's football recruiting problem, especially since APR became mandatory. Before that we got a lot of pretty good DLs and graduated them just fine. It just took a lot longer.

Any talk of decline in recruiting needs to take into account the decline in spending that occurred in comparison to the rest of the league....we went from above the middle to almost last.

Yep. The fan support definitely faded over the last few years, so no big surprise that the money tailed off too.

The good news is the hiring of CGC has brought a lot of fans back in and obviously a lot of the donors too. The WaHo jets and choppers help too. Also have to love how CGC focuses on all of the positives at GT and really helps sell the program himself. He's the face of the Athletic Department so it can't hurt to have him front and center promoting the program and encouraging people to contribute to the program.

The money dropped starting well before the last three years.

Well … it was more a shift of funds from football then an overall lack of funds. I'm not sure why MBob did that, but it sure didn't help. But, yes, a new program usually gets a boost in fund raising and now we'll see it go where it needs to.

As to Coach as "the face of the Athletic Department": that is a sword that cuts both ways. If he succeeds, then good beans. If he doesn't, then being the aforesaid "face" is going to be a detriment rather then a help. There's nothing more likely to turn people off then hype that doesn't work.

That said, I think he probably will do at least as well as Paul and maybe better. Then we'll see if 7 - 8 wins a year and an occasional 2014 – what I expect –will keep the peanut gallery quiet. Personally, I think that if Coach leaves it'll be because of a fan rebellion rather then his record at Tech.
