Saw the questions in the outlook thread. Figured we could start the conversation about tonight's scrimmage here. Fortunately @John was able to secure a credential for GTSwarm so I'll be covering the game!

What do you all hope to see/hear tonight?

For anyone listening/watching/somehow on their computer I will be in Chat during the game and can answer questions Live from McCamish.

Awesome! I'll be listening from France

I'm hoping to see/hear quick tempo, pushing the pace, and good ball movement on offense

We should definitely way out rebound them and really control the paint, but if we can't get some offense going against Clayton State it doesn't bode well for the rest of the season

Personally, I'm assuming our 3pt shooting will be underwhelming, but I'd also be interested in our perimeter defense.

I'd also be interested in the overall performances of Q. Stephens, Bolden, & Heath.

Thanks!

I'm hoping to hear about the following:

- Who are the starters?
- First off of the bench and for who?
- What does the PG rotation look like?
- Flow of the offense (Do we play through the post?)
- What does MGH look like in the half court?

Thanks for covering.. I cannot be there, but I hope to be able to listen.

I want to hear how my boy Bolden's doing. Really hoping he turns a corner this year. Like dtm, I want to hear about Q as well. I think he has the tools to be really good. Kinda like our version of Battier-lite (emphasis on lite).

@Peacone36 what's your quick take on that video of Travis getting his shot off?

Nice follow through and nice position with his off hand and really squares his body up. He seems to load up though, brings it from his mid section and up through his stroke even after the catch. I'd like to see him catch it and keep it high and go right into the shot instead of loading up.

Tech wins 74-41. Chemistry sounded pretty good. Front line was playing really well and Jackson got 3 3's in a row. Bolden and Stephens didn't score, but give them time. Mitchell sounded strong and Lammers was a nice surprise. Nice PG play off the bench from Heath. Bring on the Bulldogs.

I like CBG's press conf style. Wish I trusted his coaching more. Let's get'er done this year.

We should definitely way out rebound them and really control the paint, but if we can't get some offense going against Clayton State it doesn't bode well for the rest of the season
  • Tempo was solid in the first 4 minutes with the starters in. Jorgenson was the conductor most hope he'll be and really saw the floor well. He looked up immediately in transition and found guys running the wings. Beyond that the pace was slower. I chalk that up to two things - 1) Clayton State did a better job getting back in defensive transition and 2) we rotated so many guys that there were times we didn't have a running team on the court.
  • Rebounding was no contest. Clayton State was overmatched as they should have been.
It will be covered by WREK. 3pt shooting and 3pt D
  • Consistency from 3 was nonexistent. Outside of a quick flurry from Tadric at the end of the first half it didn't look good. What was most concerning was it seemed confidence and proper repeatable form were missing. Granted we didn't see much from Q due to foul trouble, but last night it was more of the same. Tadric clearly turned around what started as a lethargic effort and really looked solid from deep.
  • Defensive 3-point shooting - no takeaways. Clayton State fell in love with chucking the ball at the backboard even during times they were open. I can't say much about defensive closeouts nor closing under control given the Lakers' apparent disdain for organization on offense.
Personally, I'm assuming our 3pt shooting will be underwhelming, but I'd also be interested in our perimeter defense.

I'd also be interested in the overall performances of Q. Stephens, Bolden, & Heath.

  • See note on 3-pt shooting above. Perimeter defense was ok. At times guys got beat but no reason to sound the alarms yet. Clayton State was small but still had some quicks at the guard position when they felt like driving.
  • Q - foul trouble; always seemed in control; not assertive offensively in limited minutes but I don't think that's his primary role
  • Bolden - there's no way he could have been happy with last night's performance. Didn't put any shots up and didn't look to drive. Couple really bad turnovers. Hope it was just knocking the rust off.
  • Heath - during most of the first half I saw Heath as another version of Heyward - can hold his own defensively and a limited threat to score and create offensively. Second half changed my mind. He slashed to the basket, both with and without the ball, and dished to big guys for easy buckets. He also finished well at the rim with both hands. Take this (and everything) with a grain of salt given the opponent. Realistically I do not foresee Heath getting significant minutes barring Gregory's will to do so or problems with Jorg. Jorg is clearly the #1 PG. I think Heath proved he's the #2 PG - he was first off the bench anyway and played like it.

  • Starters - Jorgenson, Georges-Hunt, Stephens, Sampson, Cox
  • First off the bench - Bolden and Mitchell came in for Stephens and Sampson; also off the bench in the first 4 minutes were Heath and Lammers for Jorg and Cox
  • Little question in my mind - #1 Jorg, #2 Heath, #3 Heyward. I hope Jorg gets 30+ min/game if he can hold up. Upside looks good with more PT.
  • Offense is still searching for an identity. Perhaps the identity is known and CBG just wanted to work on different things which is very much within the realm of possibility. I was encouraged by the number of post feeds and positioning of the bigs down on the block. There wasn't much of a need for them to kick out though as Clayton State played straight man with little help, and our guys could power/maneuver their way to the basket at will. I do not expect that to happen that way next Friday. There also was some dribble penetration but not a lot. Jorg, Heath, and MGH did so occasionally but, maybe other than MGH, I didn't perceive it as something they look to do regularly.
  • MGH - hard to tell - he created some buckets for himself off baseline drives. Still not a high flyer so he needs to be creative with hesitatioin dribbles and using his weight. Didn't see much difference from last year but he also had little rhythm (like everyone else) given minutes were sparse.
I want to hear how my boy Bolden's doing. Really hoping he turns a corner this year. Like dtm, I want to hear about Q as well. I think he has the tools to be really good. Kinda like our version of Battier-lite (emphasis on lite).

  • You already know this, but you're at fault for his performance last night. As I already mentioned above, it wasn't good. Again, too early to make hasty decisions given limited minutes. However what seemed to be missing, along with everyone else, was a determined aggressiveness offensively. I was looking for something "workmanlike" from him and others but didn't see it.

I'll post a few more individual player notes by tomorrow, including observations on Jorg, Tadric, Lammers, Gueye, Sampson, and Cox. As always let us know if there's anything we can do to improve the site!
