Hasn't he had 1 carry in 7 games and they just traded a good bit to get another RB?

yeah and special teams is how a lot of fringe nfl guys like that stay around for a while. if you aren’t a drafted RB/WR your best shot at making a 53 is to at least show something on teams. if collins was pushing for him to do so that might be one of the few correct decisions he made

2019 - played in all 12 games, second on team in tackles
2020 - played in all 10 games, only 18 total tackles
2021 - played in all 12 games, 4th on team in tackles

In 2020 Thomas was moved to Nickel, probably because of his size/speed combo, but eventually was moved back to LB, where he excels.

I didn’t think about it but he gets suspended a lot for targeting. That could be part of it. Suspended first half, comes in 2nd half and gets suspended again.

And THIS is why I get so tired of the “but how many of our players make the pros” metric for judging college players. If you are a great college player it doesn’t decrease your value to the team if you don’t make the pros.

If your team has 8-10 players drafted every year, see Bama and UGA, you will have a damn good team. Players going to the NFL is a solid metric for a team’s ceiling. Individual players can be great college players and not NFL material, see Tebo and Little Joe. Having a big number of NFL talented players helps a lot.

Didn’t they also try to use him as an edge rusher before deciding he was undersized there? He’s been moved around way too much IMO. And he’s had some injury issues. He was a liability in deep coverage at Nickel IIRC, so not sure NFL safety is in his future. I’m glad he’s finally arrived at a position where he excels, but frustrating to me that it took so long for the staff to realize it. He’s a heckuva good player for us.

I’m with Augusta, and not just because I’m also an Augusta native. Curry was a good LB. Could Thomas have been better back then? Sure, maybe. Would it have made a significant difference? Probably not.

Worked pretty well for CJP’s first 3 years. Lots of NFL talent on those teams. A couple of first round picks as well. It’s not a false metric. It is an indicator of a team’s potential. More so now than 20 years ago and getting even more of a sound metric.

You can be a good team without NFL talent but you won’t win any Conference Championship without several NFL future players any more.

2009 and 2014 were the best paul johnson teams by a significant margin and also had some of the best players we sent to the nfl (morgan, burnett, demaryius, waller, shaq mason, dwyer etc.) good teams have good players and good players go to the nfl. the likelihood of having a good team without sending players to the nfl is low and we should always be striving to send as many players there as possible

This argument gets carried away with itself.

The standard that was quoted was Alabama and Georgia and sending 8 or more players to the NFL every year.

Tech has NEVER sent that many players to the NFL in a year. And neither have about 120 other teams.

The metric for Tech is winning. If we have 4 players with NFL talent in a given year, that’s great, and I’m all in favor of it, but you’re going need 10 or 12 other players who are great college players, but who don’t make it in the pros, to be a good team.

Those players at Tech, by the way, would include our best quarterbacks and running backs and even some of our best DL. That’s our history, not what Alabama and Georgia do.
