Can we stay competitive in the NIL era?

Your last sentence is what the likes of Saban and Smart are concerned about.
They are worried that other programs (like A&M) are going to be able to outspend them for the Top talent and all their advantages will dissapear. Frick them.

If, and they most certainly were, able to compete financially prior to this crap, they will be now. They are worried about their golden goose being poisoned. There's no coming back from the goose's death, but they can clearly play the game of hired guns until then.
cFB, will be like pyramid schemes...it will implode because it's unsustainable.

Before NIL there were only a few schools getting the vast majority of top-tier talent, and yes there was some under the table playing of players going on but nothing like now. Now all schools with huge fanbases can get into the game by outbidding the Bamas and UG’s of the world. Before, the allure of going to a top-tier fb factory and having really the only legit chance to win a natty was swaying a LOT the top recruits and allowing the Bama’s UG’s Ohio State etc to just stack talent, now big money blows that away and that scares the Saban’s of the world that their advantage is disappearing quickly. I agree it is unsustainable but still frick the fb factories for their tears. When some rando team like A&M manages to buy themselves a championship the blue-blood schools are going to go above and beyond to try and get this crap fixed and under control asap.

This is all nuts. 9 million NIL deal and still in HS and can't sign the LOI for another 6 months? We didn't pay our football HC that much not too long ago.

You could have posted this a decade ago. We were done, as were many, way before NIL.
This Carnegie Report on college athletics was issued in 1929:

At the very root of the manifold defects of American college athletics, in the view of the authors of the report, are "two fundamental causes:" the commercialization of intercollegiate competition on the athletic field and "a negligent attitude toward the educational opportunity for which the American college exists."

Out of 112 educational institutions visited and studied specifically for traces of pro-fessionalism, only twenty-eight were listed as entirely free of subsidized athletes. Of the eastern and mid-western universities Yale, Cornell, Chicago, Illinois, Wesleyan, Williams and the United States Military Academy were found free from professionalism.

In making public the report estimating the number of subsidized college athletes as one out of seven, Dr. Savage explained that this was "a modest, conservative figure." The number of subsidized players on first-class varsity football teams throughout the country probably would run as high as fifty per cent, he said.

Transfers are going to become even more frequent, with less friction towards easier schools

It is a mess now and it will get worse. There will be (if not already obvious spending spree to "buy" players and assure that education will NOT be a factor. We have a new JUNIOR professional league.

Unfortunately theres no direct way to make this better. The only thing i could think would have been a sort of profit sharing trust that paid student athletes based on Time spent on Scholarship and sport. (Duke BBall would probably get paid more than Duke FB for instance, UCONN women's BB would be paid more than others etc) That was only accessible upon graduation from the school OR 5 years from inception date. Likeness rights can be sold and if a normal student can earn money from it so can the athlete but any advertising using the school paid a portion of the contract into a pool that went toward the athletics programs and scholarships of the AD.

As for transfers and player recruiting:

Transfers are no longer restricted, however if you are not on a year to year scholarship you have to sit out a year. If a school offers a 5 year to play 4 scholarship. The school is forced to honor it unless the student fails to be a student and flunks out. Termination of the scholarship early by the athlete results in the sit out on transfer. Termination of it by the school allows the athlete to be paid their escrow money immediately + the remaining value of the scholarship of tuition and board. Medical scholarships remain as they are.

National Signing day and all that is now completely done away with. Players can hard commit at any time by signing the contract for the scholarship. Which allows them access to the schools NIL services and allows coaches to talk about them. No more soft commits. If a coach offers a player they are offering a hard contract, if that player accepts that's that. If you offer a 5 year recruitment contract. You offered a 5 year one.

If a coach is fired or leaves both parties are given an out to any recruiting contracts that are meant to take effect at the start of the football season as defined by the academic year and planned entry date.

If a head coach is fired or leaves a team, all members the team on multi year scholarships can file for a single one time unrestricted transfer. Unless the reason for the coach leaving was elevation to a higher level of play such as the NFL or from DIV 1 AA to DIV 1 and at least 60 percent of the coaching staff remains intact.

Players who choose to leave school early for the NFL Draft forfeit remaining years of scholarship and earnings from the school.

During the course of recruitment NIL deals must be submitted to the NCAA (i know... bleh but they probably are the only ones that can do this). These deals are not hindered but are tracked. There is no maximum on the amounts but they cannot be in any way related to pay to play recruitment. (harder to do rabbits nest but by having to report them should actually help kids out with promises only for them to be rescinded later etc I don't like this but look at the case of the texas QB that basically grifted OSU legally)

Justification:
The biggest problem is every SA is an unrestricted free agent even in season. This is just not sustainable on any level. We will see not only a watering down of the sport but complicated schemes and really just overall quality is going to take a major dive when kids spend 1 year at one place then one year at another. I mean Imagine if someone offered Saban 200 million to coach at Miami AND take all his juniors and Seniors with him. 2 Years later he did it again etc. Something has to be done to mimic the actual contracts of professional athletes. By having a capped stipend and scholarship/board paid for during the scholarship and differed profit sharing they access on graduation it rewards them for completing their education while not robbing them of money the school makes off them. NIL being completely separate now works like everyone else, but anything related with the school can be leveraged by the school to help pay for the funding to pay the athletes. Just like percentage of jersey sales and ad revenue goes to the organizations in the NFL if the players are promoting in conjunction with their position as a player of that organization.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Let the NFL manage it. CFB has no experience with managing free agency, unions, etc. create an NFL - College Div and let them deal with it. It has become a cesspool.

I mean there probably is room for an NFL farm league of 12 teams. All restricted to players age 18-21 (not sure of 32 is doable without a lot of dilution) these teams play in NFL cities (Jacksonville, indianapolis, phoenix, Seattle, Nashville, NY/NJ, Charlotte, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City)

Call it the NDFL (National Developmental Football League). Each year the NFL teams hold a draft for the best highschool talent just like the MLB draft. Kids have to declare for it BUT it does not preclude them from getting scholarships to college until they sign the contract. The players are then placed on farm teams by the organization that drafted them. This can change yearly based on the teams wants or needs.

Each season is 11 Games each team plays each team once. At the end of the season the top 4 records will play a 2 game playoff.

Each team has a 60 man roster and 10 man practice squad, teams can backfill from other practice squads.

When a player is drafted they sign a developmental deal. This deal locks them into the NFL team drafting them which basically guarantees a payout at the end of the contract. If the player plays all 3 years they are owed either a buy out (negotiated) or a fully guaranteed 2 year contract.
Teams have a developmental contract cap.
All developmental players are paid the same rate negotiated by the NFLPA While they are on a developmental roster.

Modified rules exist
Kickoffs are limited to after TDs. (Field goals result in the opponent starting on the 25) Justification is to limit hits without removing the looks completely for returners.
Full punting and Field Goals, XPs are kicked from the 10 yard line instead of the 15.
Two feet down on possession.
Targeting is a 15 yard penalty, 2 targeting fouls trigger a fine. and then on each subsequent fine.
Celebrations are allowed.
Players have Snap count limits (50 snaps a game) this is more to protect the players than anything else. This also gets more opportunities for eyes on players. Snap count limits waved in the playoffs.

Note:
Totally didn't put a team in atlanta for reasons.

Because the other post was getting pretty long.

The way the NFL would work after this is basically the NFL has the NDFL or NFDL Draft every year in November. This is actually not handled by the coaches of the NFL teams but by the teams Personnel development department and front office.

The NFL then holds the normal NFL Draft in April.

Lastly there are a few things that can also happen to players.

If a player is injured, they get an injury payout which is negotiated at signing.
If they are cut, based on the amount of time they spent they are entitled to a developmental contract compensation based on negotiated milestones.
Ex
player plays in <6 games release is 45k
Player plays in 6 games. Release from Developmental Contract is 120k
Player Plays in 12 games Release is 200k
Player plays in 12+ games, Release is 300k.

It is more likely a player not gellign with a team will be moved at least once to assess if it was the player or the farm team.

The NFL has no interest in paying for a minor league when colleges willing do it for free
