Yeah, Saban was not cut out for the pros, realized it pretty quickly, and jumped to a program where he could have full control of the organization from top to bottom.

But the thought experiment proposed above would eliminate entirely the notion of an athlete graduating with a degree. The focus would be on getting an athlete ready for the pros in two years or less.

This (sort of) sound sike what is stays quo now in college basketball. GT signed CDS because of his professional connections, and so far recruiting has been solid…but results have been…short of hopes/

This could turn out the same way for UNC. ESPECIALY if the coaching staff ONLY measures their success by getting guys into pro uniforms.

True, but at that age those 2-3 years make a pretty big difference. Plus the employment contract in the NFL defines the relationship.

I think the four years under Belichick in Cleveland were critical for his success at Michigan State and later. He brought that particular NFL style of coaching to college.

NFL rookie draft contracts are for 4 years. They can ***** and moan all they want, but rookies aren't hitting the portal due to playing time or any other reason. A college freshman who thinks he ought to be a starter can simply walk away. That will be hard for a really demanding personality like Belichick to deal with. But, maybe that freshman will be 0so thrilled at having BB as his coach he will be honored to have a backup role at UNC instead of a starting role at another P4 college. This will be interesting to watch.

Agreed, but each team has veterans who are 30+, and they have a voice in the locker room.

Additionally, the NFL roster typically has only the cream of the cream - both physically and mentally.

Scott Turner isn't working with a ton of material on offense with the Raiders. I'm not saying he's great; just that not many people would turn that cast into a juggernaut.

Yes, but the statement was relatability with guys in their late teens/early twenties. Pro coaches have lots of early twenties, too. That was my point.

Your point is valid, too. I wonder, though, how the NFL thinks about NIL - players having no contracts and hopping wherever they want. NFL rookies don’t have those luxuries, and I wonder how rookies who cut their teeth on NIL will fare under those NFL “restrictions.”

Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier were both very successful college coaches and not so hot pro coaches. Came back to college coaching.

Most rookies are busy trying to make the team and stick to worry about a different system. If they worry too much about it, they might find themselves unemployed. The NFL doesn't play.

There is a pretty big difference between most seniors in college and most of the freshmen imo. Seniors are typically more mature and focused on what their next step in life is, freshmen are enjoying the brand new experience and living it up, not thinking long term.

Sure, just saying that, if half the team is upper class men, then it’s not too far from the younger end of an NFL roster. Yes, the knucklehead 18 year olds aren’t there, but 21/22 year-old JR/SRs aren’t too far off from 24 year-old 2nd/3rd year men.

If you have make it in the pros, having seen all the ways you could fail, and how actually hard it is to make it, you have developed a level of personal responsibility, and appreciation for what you’ve got, that is on a whole different level than even the most mature 22 year old senior in college.

I don't believe the "football factory" model will work in Chapel Hill. On a slightly different but related subject, the FSU crowd thinks they can win 8 games next year. It will be a completely new roster. Given (4) sure losses on their schedule, 6-6 would be hopeful?
