It's interesting to read the opinions of Tech fans on various writers. Bisher gets lots of accolades now and deservedly so, but when I was at Tech ('58 - '62), Jesse Outlar of the Constitution was much preferred by us over the Journal's Furman Bisher.
My word, somebody on here older than me. hooray ,for us for living --and caring.

You guys rock. I'd float Grizzard above the water line. I liked his commitment to the South. Can't speak to his sports writing much.

Funny thing about Jesse Outlar, he was a graduate of UGA while Furman was a UNC grad. My father always thought that Outlar bent over backwards out of respect for Dodd who admittedly could charm the media in those days like nobody's business. Furman carried on a feud with Bear Bryant for years for reasons too complex to go into. On the other hand, I went to high school with one of his sons who thought his dad played that up to get people to read his columns. Maybe so. The son was a genius and went to Tech.

What years was his son on campus?

Don't know. He was behind me a couple of years. A true genius. His best friend in high school was a man who was the campus engineer. True story. Given his being a few years behind me, I would guess that the younger Bisher was at Tech about 1975. He had a slightly younger brother who was something of a track star in high school. Strange times.
