With conference championship games, you've already got something of a play-in. I genuinely hate the CFB playoffs. I don't *need* a playoff or even want a playoff. From a pure entertainment perspective, polls creating the final rankings gives us MUCH more to talk about for years than a playoff does. The playoff is a simple money grab by the NCAA and the P5 conferences which comes at the expense of the players, just as going from 10-11-12 games in the regular season, plus preseason games, plus conference championship games. It is all about the bucks. We're turning this thing into Pro football and I'm 100% against that. Once you add in spring football, 7/7's in the summer, camps, and the like, it is too much for a college student. Which is why places like Alabama are pro football teams masquerading as college teams. The college/amateur part is in name only. It ain't real.
I don’t disagree with your sentiments. But alas, we are dinosaurs in a modern world.

That’s why I said “not that it matters much”. 😜

It should give a sense of the industry/community “feel”. It looks like you’ve got 3 teams up for two CFP spots, with Ohio State in the lead, and maybe the additional long shot of Cincinnati.

I saw one option of Alabama-Clemson-ND-TX A&M, so even Ohio State has to think about it.

I’m sure everyone but Alabama and Clemson are sweating today’s announcement.

Which is why I like college baseball so much more. With the MLB generally taking the best players out of high school, what remains is more "amateur".

Follow the $ to predict the selection. Which top 4 selection would generate the largest audience?
Clemson
Alabama
Ohio State
ND

I think we all agree its great uGag isn't in the discussion, except for pre-season.

I just read an article about whether the semifinal game in Texas would still be called the Rose Bowl. The article said if the Rose Bowl name is not used, it would be the first time in more than 100 years no Rose Bowl game was played after a college football season. The implication there is that it has been played in Pasadena all those years, but it was played in Durham, NC in 1942 because of fears after Pearl Harbor. So it may be true that the Rose Bowl game has been played for 100+ years, but it was played elsewhere under the name Rose Bowl at least once.

One correction on this. the CFB is a money grab for the P5, not for the NCAA. The NCAA gets exactly $0 from FBS college football. They have almost no role at all in it (basically other than to determine eligibility of the players) and make no money off of it. The FBS and its money is controlled by the P5 conferences and all the contracts (TV and bowls) are with the conferences not the NCAA.

NCAA gets almost all its revenue from college basketball, in particular March Madness.

Not playing: A&M and Oklahoma

The most interesting item to watch today is how many additional bowl games get cancelled. With so many programs opting out of playing (especially the P5 schools), there's not going to be alot of programs left for bowl games.

According to Brett McMurphy the ACC Bowl games will be
UNC to Orange Bowl against A&M (Miami Jan 2)
Miami to Cheeze-it Bowl (Orlando Dec 29)
NC ST to Gator (Jacksonville Jan 2)
Wake to Duke's Mayo Bowl (Charlotte Dec 30)

Only 2 PAC-12 teams will go bowling this year.

I think alot of programs are just happy to have gotten as many games in as they did and are ready to call it quits until the spring. Been a hard year on everyone, even the players. I think alot of them would rather go home for Christmas than play in a bowl game (you can't do both). And for schools having to prepare for a bowl game during a pandemic is going to be more trouble than its worth for most of them.

I'm just hoping none of the big 4 have a COVID outbreak before the games on Jan 1.

time to expand preferrably 16 but at least 8

All four teams are located in COVID hot spots. Maybe with the rest of their students off campus it won't be too bad. Of course, keeping those young men on campus when there are no diversions will be tough.

You're right. My bad.

I just watched Brian Kelly being interviewed on ESPN. "Can't let the kids go home for the holidays because of COVID risks."

Yep, football and $$ are far more important than those players and their families and the holidays.

Betting is open for the two showdowns on New Year's Day, and William Hill Sportsbook has already come out with its odds. Let's take a look at what folks out in Las Vegas think.

College Football Playoff odds

No. 1 Alabama (-17.5) vs. No. 4 Notre Dame
No. 2 Clemson (-6.5) vs. No. 3 Ohio State

ND is the sacrificial lamb. Clem's son will be tested mightily by TOSU. I am rooting for the Tigers, but I can't see them making it through the gamut of OSU and Bammer. Bammer has a better O Line, better receivers, and at least as good of a running back. I agree Trevor is the better QB, but I will be surprised, as much as he will have to run, if he makes it through both games, assuming they play 2, healthy. Mac is not as good of a QB, but he barely ever gets touched, because of the NFL O-line he plays behind, and the fact that his receivers get separation almost instantaneously. I hate Bammer, so I hope I am wrong.
